It's handled with more than just "a man sucks it up and heals by just moving on". Chief visibly struggles and sometimes has to explain some actions he took because of trauma. I'm also a fan of some specific Cortana stuff I won't go into to avoid spoilers. But this game pulled at my heart strings.
For me it's the game where Master Chief is the most human he's ever been. He's vulnerable and still has so much to work through from the events of the previous 2 games. But he overcomes his doubts and learns to trust again. All while still being the pillar people lean on for hope in troubled times.
