I’m so sorry to hear that! I hope what you find next is fulfilling and fun. ❣️

I wish more people understood the value of good document design, especially when using a tool like InDesign. So much time and money is invested in remediating documents, instead of addressing the root of the problem.

InDesign can be tough to work with, but my students are really taking the time to learn how it works and do things right. I can’t tell you how proud I am. Now I’m just sad that the semester is almost over!

Their final project is creating a portfolio of their designs from this class as an accessible, interactive PDF.

We’re approaching this just like a web design project: starting with good content, adding structure, then using visual styling to reflect that structure.

Week 12 teaching my first #GraphicDesign course: my students are turning into InDesign pros! They’re using parent pages, setting document properties, creating paragraph styles with export tags for headings, threading text frames correctly, and writing alt text for images. 👏

You no longer need a plugin for checking color contrast in Figma!

I love how so many tools have these checks integrated. No plugins, extensions or anything else needed!

I told the students that they could use an alternative as long as they cleared it with me first. So far, everyone has opted to stick with Adobe because it's free to use on the classroom computers. I'm teaching this online next semester, though, so I imagine it'll come up then!

My students went above and beyond with their Photoshop and Illustrator projects. When we return from spring break, I’m going to teach them everything I know and love about InDesign. I’m so proud of what they’ve done so far and excited to see what they’ll create next. 🎊

Accessibility is not an overly complicated topic, nor a barrier for creativity. Accessible design is following best practices that benefit everyone. Why teach composition without discussing reading order? Or typography without readability?

One of my favorite things about teaching a lower-level graphic design course is getting to prove a point that I’ve been making for years: accessibility should be taught in tandem with the principles of design.

Week 9 teaching my first #GraphicDesign course: my students are making beautiful, complex vector graphics. They’re using swatches, paragraph styles, dynamic symbols, and all the Illustrator features I wish I knew about as a young designer.

And yes: they are naming their layers and artboards!

a close up of a woman 's face with a veil on her face and the words `` let 's go girls '' . Alt: Shania Twain in her 1999 music video for “Man! I Feel Like a Woman.” Twain wears black eyeshadow to match her long black coat, necktie, gloves, and veiled top hat. She tips the rim of the hat upwards and delivers her iconic opening lyric directly to camera: “Let’s go girls.” The words are overlaid on the video clip in bold white letters.

today: desperately trying to catch up on work after a week of sick days & inclement weather 🥲

tomorrow: returning to reality with zero stress because I Finally get to introduce my design students to vector graphics 🤠
