"Large numbers of children leave primary school unable to read well enough to fully access the secondary curriculum and then go into a system set up on the assumption they can.

In 2018 25% of children did not achieve the expected standard in reading and 24% didn’t in maths."

I was visiting with some of the best primary leaders from Pembrokeshire, and it sure gave us a lot to think about.

Massive thanks to @juliryzop.bsky.social and Marianne Chapman for welcoming us and sharing your school.

What tremendous leadership and exceptional education you’re offering.

The way that knowledge is carefully structured and sequenced, and communicated with such skill and excitement, was jaw dropping.

Shout out to the @pkckst.bsky.social team. We saw the curriculum come to life and sing, and the fruits of meticulous conceptual progression blooming everywhere.

This teacher had me, and all of the class, waiting with bated breath to hear how the neighbouring European empires were responding to the revolutionary activity in France.

Children were talking about what might be motivating the monarchs nearby. Everyone was learning TONS.

What do you do when the headteacher says you have to move on with the tour, but you just can’t bring yourself to leave the classroom?

That’s the position that I was in yesterday at West London Free School Primary.

Year 5 were learning about the Napeolonic Wars and I was on the edge of my seat.

This is why you don't design curricula around "jobs of the future".

We can't predict the future but we do know what general skills and knowledge will be valuable whatever job you do.

Reading outside of school - does it really matter?

At Reach Academy Hanworth Park, we are building a culture where pupils genuinely love reading. I have written about the first part of our journey in a blog below.

Loved Reading Lessons by Carol Atherton - a thoughtful read for any English teacher. A reminder that the books children read can change the way they see the world. Thank you @juliryzop.bsky.social for the recommendation! #EduSky

Much wisdom for the Curriculum Review @counsellc.bsky.social on not repeating old mistakes

"We might wish pupils to write in ways that are elegant or interesting, generous or peaceable, but the moment teachers slice performance goals into interim objectives, they create false progression journeys."

Can’t wait to be speaking at this about all things disciplinary literacy.

Will be sharing lots of the strategies and tools we have implemented across our 7 primary schools, that ensure excellent writing outcomes in history, geography and science.

I’ve been asked by friends if being co-headteacher at @Reachhanworthpk is as good as I expected. It’s far better.

It’s how special the daily milestones are & the strength of staff culture in founding a school that’s surprised me. Incredible.

We have a number of opportunities to join us as we grow.
