Trees are now typically handled procedurally through TreeIt or SpeedTree and again also a simple marketplace asset. The big assumption of this breakdown is that it’s made by one static salary, by hand uniquely.
Also don’t get me started on the cost of the vehicles, buildings and trees. All of these have come to be more modular and procedural or even just outsourced to a marketplace asset or even just OS work. The building would cost a single $3k for just being a modular kit and handled with PCG/Houdini.
Big budgets account for the large salaries we have due to location and cost of living. But it’s due to the length of production and amount of team members. If we can work smaller, more efficient and on a smaller production and be fully remote. We can cut these costs down substantially.
But it doesn’t account for the fact that one, it’s a simple asset. It takes hour(s) to make from scratch. Or it’s been already made from a previous production or even bought from a marketplace. Either way it isn’t the $3.6k cost.
The problem is the cost assumes that an artist is working on a single asset or working on something that can take more than a day. Example the traffic cone, $3.6K for this cone to a Junior or Mid Artist would mean at the very least more than a week a work.
Yeah a lot of this doesn’t account for modularity, OS and even just smart reuse where you can. It’s all just price tags with no real appraisal for the actual work
Yeah, it’s one of the reasons I’m trying to push out Tutorial content, because a lot of it, Simon Says (Do this because I do it) and not why you do this or what is this particular thing. Deep understanding instead of a surface level gloss over.
I’m shocked by the $3k a building number. If this was Manhattan, the budget would be $3 billion (there’s 1 million buildings)
Exactly, all of these YouTube 3D Art guys have no actual experience in Games or have Technical knowledge to justify being a loudly wrong. It’s always insane to see how out of touch they are with their trash takes.

Hey everyone, thanks so much for the support on my latest project! It's genuinely so heartwarming to hear that other folks like it! 🥹☺️
Thought I'd share more bits and pieces of it, so here are some breakdowns of the modular pieces and materials I used! 😁
New ✨Discourse✨ just dropped. One of my students sent this and ask if it’s accurate. I laughed so much. Also for those who don’t know, this from the Donut Guy trying to overly inflate costs to justify AI usage.
I mean in what world is a Traffic cone $3k, maybe I should make and sell one lol 😂
For folks curious, a chunk of my concepting was for Field Maintenance in Dire Marsh and designing the big harvester vehicles. What @ninehydras.dev and the world art/palette team did is so so rad
a sheet of some of my favorite logos I've designed wherein all secondary colors have been turned into matcha green and tertiary colors to dark grey. these logos range from comics titles, studio logos, artist logo marks, and in-game assets.

a poster of the full illustration from MANIFOLD GARDEN's iam8bit physical editions. I illustrated and designed this poster as well as the packaging.
a screenshot from upcoming game GRAVE SEASONS by PERFECT GARBAGE!!! it is a pixel art farming sim. In this screenshot the main character is fishing in a lush forested area. I created the UI art-- top left has the player's energy gauge & time, top right has the date & weather and season.
