Fun fact: did you know there is an American Psycho II? Starring Mila Kunis & William Shatner, it retcons the tone & ambiguity of the 1st film in the 1st scene, then cuts to some Hillary Duff type music & establishes itself as possibly the most abhorrent example of IP abuse in cinematic history.

Same. The film hangs onto the 1st person unreliable narrator of the book (an extremely difficult, nauseating read) so as to preserve the ambiguous ending. The ick is by design; BEE is uncomfortably good at it to deeply problematic extent. If the film looked away, it’d betray the source material.
