To deal with reports of unauthorised access to Kinsella Hall and high demand on study spaces, the Library has introduced extended opening hours in the Hamilton Library and will be conducting ID card checks in Kinsella Hall. For details: www.tcd.ie/library/open... and www.tcd.ie/library/open...
These marks provide a unique record of and insight into the history of print making in Ireland and are a tangible link to past times when female entrepreneurship, local industry and craftsmanship were thriving alongside one another ✨
Noted during the ongoing cataloguing of these historic artefacts, the wooden blocks upon which the photoengraved zinc plates rest feature stamps or impressions hinting to their creator.
Photo engravings belong to the relief class of printing processes, of which the earliest representatives are woodcuts and type.
Throughout the existence of the Cuala Press, the Irish Photo Engraving Company Ltd., which was located on Middle Abbey Street, Dublin, manufactured most of the photoengraved printing blocks which were used to create the visual and literary artworks which the Cuala Press is renowned for today.

... that the original Cuala Press printing presses & associated materials (typesets, tools, printing blocks, etc.) were once housed in this very building? Today, an array of artworks which were created upon these presses now rest in exhibition cases within this space.
Have you visited ‘The Yeats Sisters & Irish Design’ exhibition, inside the newly refurbished Printing House? Recently, Dr Billy Shortall set eyes on this depiction of the building, designed by artist George Atkinson and printed by the Cuala Press in 1919.
