An immigration court few have heard of is quietly shaping policy behind the scenes President Trump has slashed the number of people on the Board of Immigration Appeals and stacked it with his appointees, tightening the due process available for immigrants, an NPR analysis shows.

Tucked in the Justice Dept a little-known board is rapidly setting immigration policy. Reconfigured by Trump, the Board of Immigration Appeals is pushing out more precedent setting decisions than ever and almost all favor ICE attorneys.

I was looking for the English-language word to describe the way publications pushed out chicana women, and how we’re just left with often problematic chicano men who can publish their thoughts about Chávez.

I remembered the word: patriarchy.

You won’t find the Columbus piece online or on Web Archive. Both were removed. But there are remnants if you search.

Varela never took accountability for defending Columbus. And he never apologized to me. He thrives in a journalism community that tolerates men like him and quiets women like me.

He zealously defended the piece. And he dragged me. For years. Varela, who self-identifies as white and didn’t disclose the stake his NYC Italian family had in making Columbus a hero, went on to do well for himself writing, for example, how whites need to listen to indigenous peoples.

The irony.

Ten years ago Julio Varela’s Latino Rebels published “In Defense of Columbus.” I messaged him privately explaining that the post was unacceptable. He responded that he wanted a site for all sides. I called it out publicly, explaining some of Columbus’s atrocities. He blocked me across all social.

The investigation is about one man and several girls and women. The implications are about so many men and an infinite number of girls and women.

The “precious right” to vote is codified as an amendment to the Constitution. The amendment doesn’t require identification in order to exercise the right to vote.

There are a lot of things to be mad at Sen Mullin for, but now is not the time for people who have no special insight to revive their takes on Cherokee identity & police how Indigenous people should appear.

It's important to keep in mind that Markwayne Mullins is a Cherokee citizen. And that most reporters (and frankly most people in the U.S.) don't talk to natives and have very little insight into what a tribal nation even means.
