I suspect the Pope sounds "woke" to many Christian conservatives because the US is steeped in prosperity theology, where the point of worship is to deliver health and wealth to believers. Thus, "feed the hungry" and "show mercy for the poor" sounds needlessly political and "woke."

I think even just a few years ago the MNT reaction was much more doom and gloom but they've just been bad comparatively even though it's the latest "golden" generation, and I think part of that is the players don't play with the same "dawg" in them a la Clint Dempsey and Co. (or going further back)
