All age verification systems are identity verification systems, and identity verification systems are surveillance systems. @fightforthefuture.org @eff.org
Who could have seen it coming?
And the big cultural push around “big tech reform” is the idea that we’re protecting children from the harms of big tech, when we’re actually giving big tech the very power they seek to destroy the world for all children. And that is no longer hyperbolic when Palantir is announcing it via manifesto
A lot of our big “we’re gonna hold big tech accountable” bills actually hand them + the government unprecedented power to track, censor, and deplatform internet users—and would require us to link our identities to everything we do online, meaning no more privacy. Greatly reducing opposition to them
At a time when mass surveillance and autonomous weapons companies like Palantir are openly announcing their plans for violent world domination, it is crucial that our attempts at “big tech reform” don’t actually give them more power—ie via government mandated age verification/identity software
Lots of people in the Bay act like they have some kind of monopoly on smart weirdos. These people have never been to Somerville.
And THIS is why we love the alt text 🫡
On Android, notifications are cleared from storage after 24 hours. They also do not persist after app deletion (as far as I can tell.)
Every 3D print in NY can be surveilled — from political speech to company prototypes — if these provisions make it into the state budget. We need to act NOW to stop it. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...
Please explain
And as pointed out in other comments, there are different methods that compromise Signal notification privacy: Shoulder surfing, sharing data with other apps, and possibly additional forensic exploits we don't know about yet
No, the same issue is not shared right now. Android handles notifications differently than iOS, the same method of obtaining notification content isn't possible. However, notifications rely on infrastructure outside of Signal's control, which can change. If you are high risk, adjust your settings.
URGENT! The Massachusetts House just passed a "social media ban" that would force YOU to upload a government ID or submit to a face scan to post online. CALL YOUR STATE SENATORS! 978-485-4694
Okay bluesky I need your help
I live in Massachusetts. You might think we're a bastion of lefty intellectualism but our state government a clusterfuck of post-puritan real estate bros

Doesn't work for me...
The dangerous law known as FISA Section 702 is up for renewal in Congress. It allows government to spy on Americans’ communications without a warrant.
Use our action center to tell Congress to reform Section 702 and end mass warrantless surveillance!
Access to the internet is a human right. Yet governments around the world are pulling the plug to control narratives and crush resistance. Join EFF and @Amnesty.org / @AmnestyUK.bsky.social on Thursday, April 16 to learn how those affected can fight back. www.eff.org/event/effec...
THREAD: The Massachusetts House just advanced a draconian and unconstitutional social media ban bill.
"This legislation would have kicked Greta Thuneberg off social media before she organized her first climate protest. How does that make kids safer?"

5/ American? Think you're protected by the 4th Amendment from ADINT?
"I know my rights, get a warrant..." Right?
Well, some sheriff is just going to pull out the credit card & buy
heatmaps from the report showing tracking

And you just told a surveillance company where you sleep.

The famous Andor line is that "tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle." Here is a perfect example of that through malicious compliance: Idaho forced the city of Boise to remove its Pride flags. So the city painted rainbows everywhere else.
screenshot showing the different illustrated animals you can choose to welcome you to the Kagi search engine home page. There are numerous dogs, a cat, a kangaroo, and a capybara.
I love that @kagi.com lets you choose your little search engine buddy. Needs more cat options, tho. ☺️🐈⬛
Let’s…uh…maybe cool it on the Taco stuff. Not sure that double-dog daring Trump into war crimes is good
We have an Iranian friend in Tehran who has devoted his career to translating Thoreau for an Iranian readership. Starting with 'Walden,' through Thoreau's anti-slavery works and essays on civil disobedience, the lot.
We have not heard anything from him since the bombardment began.
For people intending this evening to publicly petition our government for a redress of grievances:
AM I FREE TO LEAVE?
and
I INVOKE MY RIGHTS TO SILENCE AND COUNSEL AND WILL NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS WITHOUT MY ATTORNEY PRESENT.
are the only things you say to police or law enforcement.
Thanks to @jhpot.bsky.social for featuring our app Dangerzone in @wired.com.

feeling like you want to try and reduce human suffering today? even if we, as an individual, can’t do everything we wish we could, we can do more than pretend everything is fine—wear a respirator and break some denial today.
