We've some great submissions for this week's snapshot! Joe Blackman found our most famous resident, Napoleon, surveying an empty Forum. Totty Brobyn caught a bare tree under the blue sky outside the Innovation Centre. Prof Neil Gow found this ‘Earth stars’ fungi growing on our Streatham Campus.

Each week members of our community submit photos of our campuses for inclusion in our weekly staff bulletin. We think they're too good not to share, so welcome to our first Uni Snapshot!

Thanks to Debbie Ironside Smith, Ebony Houghton and Julie Taylor for capturing some beautiful skies over campus.

Smallest County Council is around 550k, so this level allows East Sussex to unitarise on its own. I suspect most remaining County Councils would also find it hard/impossible to split into multiple +500k units.. so I wonder if it’s really about encouraging straight conversion from CC to Unitary.

Opportunity and risk in a changing climate | CBI Insights from Stuart Brocklehurst, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at one of the world’s leading authorities in climate research, the University of Exeter

I was delighted to write this article on climate and business for the CBI ahead of their Annual Conference on 25th November, at which I’ll be speaking.

Business balances risk and opportunity, climate change and our response will drive both over the years ahead.

Trees and land absorbed almost no CO2 last year. Is nature’s carbon sink failing? The sudden collapse of carbon sinks was not factored into climate models – and could rapidly accelerate global heating

Things to know:

Land and ocean remove half of our CO₂ emissions yearly.

For climate and us, the rate of removal matters.

This rate slows over time.

Sure, all that CO₂ will eventually end up in the ocean over thousands of years, but it's not fast enough.

We have to stop burning fossil fuels!

Green line graph time series of average sea surface temperature anomalies for each May to July from 1854 through 2024. There is large interannual variability, but an overall long-term increasing trend. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline. 2024 is the warmest on record.
