John McPheeâs âevenhandedness harks back to an era when reasonable people could disagree.â Elizabeth Kolbert writes about McPheeâs piece âEncounters with the Archdruid,â a classic of environmental reporting.

WhoopsâŠI think thatâs why the Rock looks so surprised.
Should universities take official positions on contested social and political issues? Or should they remain neutral? And if they stay neutral, does that mean they should stay silent? -Â I have a proposal.

Big shout out to Pele for the perfectly timed demonstration of hot spot volcanismâright when my Intro to the Earth System students were researching it for their igneous rocks problem set! Love when real-world events align with the classroom. Seems like you got my memo!

Earth's temperature history for the past 500 million years
For my first scientific post here, I want to talk about the Phanerozoic temperature record we published last Fall, which unfortunately has been making rounds in the climate denier circuit đ First though hopefully you can appreciate the beauty of this reconstruction âš...
Excellent post

Right, thatâs an interesting question about âoutsourcing emissionsâ in globalized marketplace. I suspect since transport + electricity production are the majority of US emissions, itâs not the main story, but Iâm curious how thatâs is attributed.
Since we can reduce emissions in the US and EU, the question is can China and India turn that trend around. . .
Now, the point of the plot is just a reminder that while the TOTAL global emissions has not declined, as you show, annual CO2 emissions has been DECLINING in the EU since the 1980s and in the US since about 2008. Total global emissions is what matters, of course, emissions reductions is happening.
(2) âcement carbonationâ - cements and mortars have calcium hydroxide in them which reacts with CO2 to make caclium carbonate, CaCO3, sequestering the CO2 as rock. But yes, there is also significant CO2 release during cement production. However, so of that is in the past for current stock of cement
Ok, sure thing. First definitions: (1) âBunkersâ refers to bunker fuels, which are fuels used in international aviation and shipping. These emissions canât be attributed ton any individual nationâŠ.

This is interesting, but masks some progress being made in emission reduction in the US and EU. Far from sufficient, but itâs not the case that nothing has been done.
