It's a really good episode - although I am a tad biased as the host 🤣
A snippet of next week's Under Review podcast where negative and null results are under review with the brilliant @scurry.bsky.social
He highlights the importance of these results and how they could qualify as impact case studies, especially concerning issues like the MMR vaccine and autism link.
Coffee table, get an old coffee table and have some toughened glass cut to size. Bingo!
I know what you are saying, my maps were only maybe 20 years old. It’s the cost benefit of what you’ll turn them into. Eventually they’ll be landfill, but if it makes you sad, don’t do it. Frame them or turn them into a table piece by putting toughened glass over them etc
You should do it. The wall wasn’t great and we had the option of sticking more pictures over it. We’ve not planning to move, so decided to go for it. We can always scape it off later and start again.

Happy 75th birthday to the wonderful Peak District. I took my old hiking maps and pasted them to the top of our landing for a large map of that special place

Will the academic exodus from X silence research?
Spread of researchers across multiple platforms (including Bluesky) brings warnings of a tougher struggle for impact.

What does @nihr.bsky.social evidence say about the health impact of supported tenancies?
We explored this as part of our Knowledge mobilisation work looking at public health and housing.

By fostering a culture of kindness and collaboration, and by protecting the fundamental basic science that underpins all applied breakthroughs, the scientific community can move toward a more sustainable and engaging model.
7/8
Ultimately, Jason’s vision for the future of academia involves a fundamental rebranding of rejection. Rather than seeing reviewer three’s critique as a failure, he encourages scientists to view it as critical constructive feedback that acts as a valuable resource for improvement.
6/8
He suggests that the neglected truth of science is the role of luck and happenstance, a reality often obscured by survivorship bias. To combat this, he envisions a future university system that prioritises formalised mentorship and team science over the individualistic, competitive model.

In the podcast we discuss creative approaches to science communication, and for a shift away from the superficial metrics that currently blight the field, such as the obsession with publication counts and the h-index which he believes incentivises quantity over quality.

@redpenblackpen.bsky.social began over a decade ago when Jason found himself seeking psychological relief from the frustrations of academia. He began doodling cartoons that captured the duality of research: the ‘black pen’ of creative discovery, the ‘red pen’ of harsh, often systemic, critique.

He is a leading expert in systems biology, and uses computer models to understand how complex biological networks, such as the interactions between a virus and a human host function and response to stress.
