When writing travel—long trips on horseback, for example—writing fantasy or historical fiction, there’s no substitute for experience. In this case, it is Burnaby’s experience 😊

I have a new favourite thing; two sideswords, an early 16th century style. This is living!

Totally fair. I’m way to the left of him, but right now his non-corrupt competence is very appealing.

Yes, I have published 50+ novels with Hachette. I’ve made a living at it since 1999.

No. Sorry. I have all the beta readers I need.

Very kind of you to ask, but I have a nice group of beta readers. This will be my 58th published book, and yes, I still appreciate feedback, favourable and critical.

Another 20k to go, but damn that feels good. It’s a challenge to write in the current geo-political environment; a challenge not to doom scroll and despair. So frankly, this feels like a small victory

In about ten minutes I’ll hit 100k words in this book. Yesterday I wrote a fantastic fight scene (if I do say so myself) which may require footnotes for sword nerds. Yes, having fun!

Listening to Mark Carney chatting with the Artemis II crew. He just sounds so human, so much like a leader.
Still a neo-liberal banker. But in this moment, I’m onboard.

Military history is a really weak point for this administration. For example, earlier this week the President attempted to lecture Great Britain about gunboat diplomacy…

I had a 15k word week last week. Hoping for more this week but taking an hour to make a change to a Secret Project. Over the weekend I read something that triggered an idea that… well, you know…

Thursday at 6pm @taowong.bsky.social and I will be (unarmed) at @bakkaphoenix.bsky.social in Toronto to talk about his latest book (which I loved). BTW that’s us sparring with side swords last night. Swords will probably be discussed!

(4) Among the many things about the current US administration that puzzle me; they claim to be conservatives, but they suck at military history and operational planning and intelligence. I’m not in any way a fan of neo-imperialism but… at least be competent in your evil. Read ahead.

(3) but when the treasure shipments became uncertain, the banks became nervous, loans were refused or cost astronomical interest, and Spanish military power declined. It didn’t collapse… but the system broke and never recovered.

(2) Spain had already (massively) overspent; the treasure fleets of stolen silver and gold from First Nations cultures in the New World were mortgaged years in advance, which worked because banks will loan against reliable income no matter how immoral….

A brief history lesson for the Trump administration: in the 16th century, English ‘privateers’ helped bankrupt the global military superpower, Spain. It wasn’t that they inflicted much damage to Spanish trade… it’s that Spain’s backers, foreign banks, couldn’t stand the risk. (1)
