Anyway. It’s healthy to consider your relationship with the levels of engagement you give and receive. I think about it a lot, and how it is often paralyzing to me!

If you also have those feelings, unpack them. You may find out what kinds of words and people truly matter to you.

I wonder if other writers notice it too. I see folks put so much pressure on themselves to engage with things, especially in the fic space. If you self promote, you must cheer 2x harder for others. En masse, it can begin to feel shallow or worse, exclude the people you don’t continuously shout out.

Continuing~ Not all engagement is like this, I’ve been lucky to receive largely genuine reactions to my stuff. But there is a fine line between mutual appreciation and transactional friendships that can make interacting feel fraught. And~

This is a struggle for those of us who get paid to examine art for a living (as a director, etc.). Seeing other art is valuable, but what counts is what you bring to your own table afterward.

One thing I see in #ficwriter land is the agita of the "unread list." If you're reading for joy, by all means! But you can tell when you're just a bullet on someone's list bc they want you to read their fic too.

Comments are currency but for a more thoughtful world, be genuine with your time. 💕

The weirdness started for me on day 1, and for what? Fic metrics. Cra-zy.

Take a look at the relationships around you. If they feel transactional or put you in a headspace that is bad most of the time, bounce!!!

Also if you think there is only one shady person in this fandom, be really careful and protect yourself. Awhile back, I said something about being in a bad social experiment that got misconstrued: guys, there are so many people willing to make you feel bad about yourself online...

So anyway, if you're still here, be nice to people and don't do shady stuff. (Actually I'm really bad at telling people what to do, so you don't have to take my advice at all and just worry about your own soul instead. ✌️)
