When I feel down, I remind myself that we’re only a few years from The Three Stooges shorts starting to enter the public domain.
An illustration of a scene from Fargo drawn in the style of the comic strip The Far Side: Marge encountering the wood chipper situation and exclaiming, “Oh Jeez.”
I’ve been rewatching the Coen Bros filmography this month and while drawing a Barton Fink illustration, it struck me how much their films feel like Far Side cartoons: funny, strange, clever, yet frequently inscrutable. Anyway here’s a thread!
The following thread is a work of fiction. It was originally published on Twitter/X in July of 2021. In 2022, it was one of the finalists for a Hugo award in the "Best Short Story" category.
The story is image-based; alt-text for each image is provided.

britain used to be a proper country (would air hallucinatory queer antifascist folk horror on the BBC at primetime)
This is extra true because Warwick absolutely treats some of it's most prestigious departments like dog dirt. It's film studies department ranks as one of the best in the country in most metrics and is, in my biased opinion, incredible. It'd be nice if it was treated that way by the university!
My alma mater being cringe again? Hard to believe (it's really not)
I feel like we owe Kojima an apology because he’s like “This is my villain, Corrupto Moneyguy. He controls the media and eats children.” As it turns out, this is a nuanced and accurate view of global politics.

The difference between the SD version and the 4K restoration of But I'm a Cheerleader is honestly shocking -- and wouldn't have been possible if the director hadn't stolen the film elements from the studio years ago, before they threw them out

David Cage is one of the directors I chose to write about in my thesis and while I'm not discussing qualitative factors, boy is he dog shit. One of the reasons that I chose him is that his work infuriates me.
It might be peak Robyn to be accidentally downloading 130+gb of Czech films... I guess I'll have to see if it actually finishes in about 9 hours
!! This is also from one of the years that is particularly important to my thesis. Even if it doesn't contain information about the games that I was writing about, just having more, accessible game history is so important.
This one can just go straight into the thesis

🎮 Retro games shaped generations. But many are vanishing.
Some, like educational games by Yaakov Kirschen, who died on April 14, were almost lost forever.

Reading this just made me cry. So clear and simple, and the explanation of biological sex being bimodal rather than binary shits all over all the transphobic arguments.
I always knew the science nerds were coolest people around! ✊️
A cool concept from John Ford's Hell Bent (1918): an author contemplates a painting, which Ford then recreates and brings to life

My spoiler-free review of Severance S2 is that it was very good and I liked it, but it could have benefited from being about two episodes shorter. I am glad I stuck with it, and was very pleased with the ending.
I say this to my own clients and prospects already, but: Avoid Cambridge if you can, all right? This right here is why.

Some people don't know this, so I'll tell the story again: Masi Oka is the cofounder of Mobius Digital, and co-producer of Outer Wilds (2019).
Without Hiro Nakamura, this incredibly brilliant space game wouldn't exist. 😁
Oka has also worked for ILM. On the Prequels and Mission to Mars (2000).🤟
I am sure lots of people are unaware that we have a new game and a new kickstarter running RIGHT NOW! It’s called Mashina. Appreciate anyone who shares this!

Who hasn’t been innocently hanging out at the inauguration of a man dubbed by people in his own party as the next Hitler and accidentally performed a Nazi salute that could only be more blatant if it was accompanied by a tiny finger moustache?

Sixty years to the day it was first shown on BBC One, here's a piece trying to piece together Julia Jones's first TV play, The Navigators. It received a mixed reaction, but had a wide reach, appealing to more than the Circus on ITV #TheWednesdayPlayAt60 maysbritain.home.blog/2025/01/20/e...
