- I've done a bad thing. be pissed, it's valid

- I'm glad it's a pain, I feel a bit better about using my avi in public

- it's good to know in case you end up needing it (or back up your shit)

- VRchat should let avatar owners download their avis. shouldn't be necessary.

learning, continued:
- it's a pain in the metric ASS if you don't know anything about avatar work to begin with.
- you still have to totally rework the avatar if you're not keeping just textures.
- if you don't use something on an avatar, it STILL UPLOADS. optimize, move it OUT of your avatar.

--can possibly learn from based on my lil adventure:

- it's still a risk. of course.
- private avatars are fine. stuff I found only let you get public stuff - encryption works, tested my avatar just to see what would happen.
- these tools have account-level opt-outs. no clue on authenticity.

as far as everything else goes - materials, scripts, textures, it's all here in whatever quality it was in unity at the time. if you need em and don't mind going public ~10m, it's an ok recovery method.

now, technical shit. avatars are baked. what does that mean? an avatar's parts need an armature to move together - it's like scaffolding. vrchat takes all the bones, and turns them into one big armature.

offered to optimize it as best I could, she said she doesn't have the project anymore. hard drive died like 2 years back, didn't care at the time, but if I could figure it out, she'd let me rebuild it.

it took some googling, but eventually I stumbled across the right resources and got it sorted--

--that was still on like... avatar 2.0, DPS, dynamic bones. MEGA OLD. finally got to bump into her in game, and her avatar is HUGE. like, 500+MB VRAM, over 100MB download, this thing is unoptimized garbage, just a thing with this edit I guess. the creator didn't know how to optimize for shit.

so before I go on this tangent, bad part: I'm talking about ripping avatars. it's POS-y depending on who you ask - I'm close friends with the owner. she's cool as fuck, and I wanted to do something nice.
