It Could Lead to Tens of Thousands of Deaths. In the Meantime, It’s Wreaking Havoc on Americans’ Sanity. Imagine not being able to feed your kid because of a mistake on a piece of paperwork.

For @slate.com & @economichardship.bsky.social, I reported on how chaos and changes surrounding SNAP benefits are taking a toll.

People described endless fear and worry over feeding their kids, where their next meal will come from, and whether SNAP could become even more difficult to access.

Opinion | Measles Took My Daughter. This Is What I Want Everyone to Know.

still can’t believe that given the choice between “bountiful, free, clean energy from the earth, wind, and sun” and “poisonous dead animal sludge price sensitive to global politics” we keep choosing the latter

Figure showing number of competitive grants mentioning women from 2015-2025. The number was rising until recently, with a precipitous drop in the last year.

Figure showing number of competitive grants mentioning women from 2015-2025. The number was rising until recently, with a precipitous drop in the last year.

At the end of 2024, the National Academies put out a report concluding the NIH has woefully underfunded women’s health research, and they suggested $15 B should be invested over the next 5 years.

Here’s what’s happened instead. Hard to study women’s health if you can’t say “women.”

the sad thing is that this is literally true in the drug treatment industry, where urine testing is an enormous source of income with very few benefits

(I was just curious because if real, it's useful for collecting, but I don't think it is ;-)

I've been in training full time for the past 12 years.
I need one of these grants to start my academic career.
The current administration could support my research for the next millennium with a small fraction of what they have stolen from the American people.

InfoWars Let me tell you a story. When I was a child, I suffered from night terrors. It was always the same dream: I could hear my family and neighbors wailing…

For U.S. medical researchers, shrinking labs and bare budgets are the new reality The Trump administration has slashed the number of grants from the National Institutes of Health, with far fewer focused on women, cancer and mental health.

Very good (if tragic) story from the Washington Post

me too! and these are the same jerks who are arguing that we can't have safer supply/harm reduction for people using illegal drugs we don't like... but we should give safer supply to people using illegal drugs we do like...

Photo I took of these wonderful people (the faces of whom I’ve blacked out) singing happy Birthday to their lovely old dog at a bar I was at tonight in Portland

I was at a dog-friendly bar in NW Portland tonight and a table behind me started singing Happy Birthday and then I realized it wasn’t for a person but a really old dog who was wearing a crown and he was old and fucking adorable and I love this city

And the way I think they rationalize this is that they *only* publish work from writers who are working for research universities. Which… sigh

LOS ANGELES: Please help these kitties Kit & Caboodle. Their owner passed away last week, and I've taken it upon myself to find them a loving forever home. They are GOOD BABIES. Can anyone *LA area only* adopt them? I just don't want them to end up in a kill shelter. Share, RT, ask around... thanks!

Mayor Zohran Mamdani behind the counter of a bodega in The Bronx, flanked by various people. A journalist with a microphone labeled “Shop Cats” is standing in front of the sales counter, and holding the mic up to a black and white cat sitting on the counter next to bananas. The cat has an expression like in the famous “Sir, are you aware that you are a cat” meme

I’ll make everyone a deal: if Jay Bhattacharya sits down *with me* for a fireside chat, with a live audience and live-streamed, I will stop “responding with vitriol”.

That would indicate to me that he is willing to meet opposition.

Journalism In An Age Of Authoritarianism | NOEMA The media needs to rethink its role in protecting democracy — rather than just chronicling its demise.

“In our ‘post-truth’ age, facts may be jettisoned if they collide with partisan identity. Tribal loyalty often outperforms reality.”
