I’ll do a bit more research but I think it’s pre 1950’s at least. Indo China was a French colony until 1954, when the French-held garrison at Dien Bien Phu fell after a siege led by Ho Chi Minh’s forces. After the fall of Dien Bien Phu, the French pulled out of the region, so that might be a clue
