Conversation, writing, and reading were the most efficient study methods for my second and third languages, especially for retention and review!

์ค์ฌ - the effect of sunlight or moonlight being reflected on ripples of water
Personally loved UPROOTED and found it very rereadable too. I haven't read other books that describe magic in quite that way, so I'm on the lookout for similar styles
Cette derniรจre semaine, j'ai participรฉ ร quelques conversations vocales pour pratiquer mon corรฉen. Chaque appel dure trois heures ou plus donc รงa m'aidait bcp. Math and physics make up Cas Russell's non-fantasy superpower. It revived my interest in physics again, and seeing the author's background, the details are undeniably written by an expert.
You know what people used to say in 2017 after Park Geun-hye's impeachment:
Ewha students tried to save their school and ended up saving our whole country
Black and white photograph of a woman sitting on a pagoda-tiled roof. This is Eulmildae, the highest point of the city of Pyongyang during this time.
I'm translating a novel by Park Seolyeon on Kang Juryong, a labor union activist who staged this rooftop protest in Pyongyang during the Japanese occupation. She made the front pages of all the dailies. www.ildaro.com/9290
It's the men who need to get off our asses
Was asked to interview for a western media outlet and they were like "and has the impeachment vote awakened the women into political consciousness" and I was like ??? Women have always been the FOREFRONT of protest in Korea: Yoo Gwan Soon, stroller-pushing mothers in 2008, Ewha Women's Uni in 2016??
Not received, but I most often take notes in my TL (if I need more supplementary notes, I write those in my TL too, and then I use my first lang if it's really necessary)
Both langs I learned through school or as a self-studying heritage speaker. If it was a lang from scratch, I'd prob try from int
Also I had gotten ์ ์ฃผ ํ ๋ผ because I learned that Anton Hur translated it. I knew it was gonna be fun for me! He translated ๋๋์์ ์ฌ๋๋ฒ too, which I wrote my honors thesis on.
Hehe I'm only missing Whale among the physical books displayed, which feels great. I have both KR + ENG editions of ์๋ชฌ๋, ํ์, ๋๋์์ ์ฌ๋๋ฒ, and ์ ์ฃผ ํ ๋ผ. ๊ณ ๋ has been on my list to buy and read since before the Booker announcement too, so I gotta work my way through the rest of these to get to it โบ๏ธ
I'm including current bc I'm really just focusing on these two:
โ Korean (learning hanja only as a shortcut to figure out ํ์์ด without using a dictionary lol)
โ French (standard)
Will learn in future:
โ ASL
โ MSA
โ Maghrebi Arabic or Emirati Arabic (I count this as separate from MSA)

Representation of a multilingual identity in wool - the description is in the content text.
A different kind of 'language portrait', asking students to use wool (a colour for each language). Shared anonymously, with permission: "I chose the blue to represent my English in my brain as itโs the language I think and dream in primarily. (1/3 ๐งต)

My main beef with Duolingo, aside from some of the wonkiness that was going on with some Asian language courses back when I tried them out, is how they fired real people just to replace them with AI. Language is at its core such a human thing...

I used to, but if they take their studies seriously, then the results could be more important, especially if the initial reason fell away and was replaced by a new reason. "Wanting to be Korean" isn't a brilliant reason. It's ignorant and makes me uncomfortable.

That said, I hope the conservative party imprisons their National Assembly members at their hq every weekend until the next election or impeachment ๐ Thatโll go down really well for everyone, especially said members
Rollercoaster of emotions right now. I absolutely despise Korean politics but I'm so proud of my people filling the streets and protesting on a freezing Saturday. Undoubtedly first of many long, cold days. ๋ฉ๋ฆฌ์ ์์ํฉ๋๋ค.
Talked to some protesters at length-- they told me they came out expecting impeachment to fail but that it was important to come out anyways and put pressure on the legislature. "See you next weekend, you bastards," one said.
Reports are coming in everywhere that cafรฉs and restaurants around the National Assembly have received so many prepaid credits by anonymous citizen donors that they are *no longer accepting* prepaid orders.
Any protester at and around the National Assembly is encouraged to use these credits โ๏ธ โ๐ผ

Complete transparency: I picked up this novel in middle school not totally sure what I was walking into, and it made me grow up *a lot* about queerness and what it means. So ironic to see the me before this book, and the me after

Reading a non-YA novel in my target language was definitely the hardest thing I've done so far to work towards mastering my TL!
It was ๋๋์์ ์ฌ๋๋ฒ by ๋ฐ์์ ์๊ฐ๋. Also @antonhur.com's translation LOVE IN THE BIG CITY is one of my favorite lit in translation books, been raving about it since 2022 ๐ฅฐ
I used to use Yeolpumta bc it had the cleanest format for me. But nowadays, I just speak or read in my languages daily.
I'm trying to use a habit tracker to mark the days I write, but honestly, I keep forgetting to track even if I remember to write ๐คก

As an actual Korean citizen and resident with a Korean legal education to boot, my perspective of Korean culture and politics tends to beโฆ correct.
I post mostly about literature and working as a translator of booksโI also travel A LOT for work. Here I am in Sydney, Australia.
Thatโs it for now โจ
Korea Expert here. Iโll explain whatโs going on over there because the Orient can be confusing to Westerners. In Korea, there is a concept known as โthe law.โ (๋ฒ) This is a set of rules which are enforced to encourage prosocial behavior and ensure stability which leaders arenโt allowed to break.
The Life-Changing Magic of the Rule of Law: The Korean Art of Decluttering and Impeaching
