Since Hud was a heavy consumer of Slusho, it could be possible that, due to the seabed nectar in his body (which is what the monster feeds off of and is the main ingredient in Slusho) Hud died only because the monster smelled the seabed nectar in his body. (This could also be the reason why the monster specifically hit the helicopter that Hud was in, and why the monster only ate his lower half.)
