One of the arguments I’ve heard in favor of naked gerrymanders is that a state can/will “go back” to independent redistricting when the emergency passes.
Doubtful.
This is not advice in either direction. Current events are a sign of the times.

Papers with appendices more than 2x the length of their bodies should be books.
Polisky, if I’m not mistaken, someone once shared an overview of null findings on what does not drive far-right / radical right voting.
If such a collection exists, or if you’re willing to share other important null results, I would greatly appreciate it!
I learned from it.
I think that a prohibition on discussing it is bad, and I’m glad it’s lifting.
The trends you described align with my experience, broadly. It depends on the institution.
The cutting edge of this conversation is what to do with respect to “equity” in grading. My sense is that the zeitgeist is about a year behind practitioner knowledge. Also, the common assumptions about correlations are wrong.
Not long ago, it wasn’t okay to talk about grade distributions in the open.
Is there a good book length discussion in English about the 1989 negotiation and agreement on the original Belgian cordon sanitaire? Book chapters/long essays also welcome. Looking for details about how it played out in public at the time.
Lijphart (1977) argued for greater-than-minimum-winning coalitions on the grounds that it was unwise to “treat politics like a game.” IOW, take steps to suspend the logic of MWC.
Canada debates the morality of minimum-winning coalition vs. oversized coalition. nationalpost.com/opinion/carn... More next.
I went 30 years without a clip. This time I’m trying a clip. That means I’m due for clipless again around the age of 70.

Q for political theorists. Would reading Hume blow up my positivist research program? If so, why?
The 1990s need to end. It’s really old at this point.
Stay tuned for a fun teaching tool for parties/elections-type courses…

Some time back, at the request of @mullinmeg.bsky.social, I pulled together a whole host of maps derived from the Census of Governments that Census once published but seemingly no longer does.
I’m currently sticking them in a lecture—the reason I assume most people want these maps—and so can you!
When I think about various social problems over the past 2-3 decades (destruction of Boy Scouts, degradation of Cath. Church, MeToo, VA lt gov), my overall reaction is that we have a “pervert problem.” I’m sure there’s a clinical way to say that, but that’s the phrase I’d use if running for office.
So much learning though! :D

Lots of talk about inflation & voters' political views. But how well do voters actually understand info about inflation?
We find that most citizens conflate changes in rates w/ changes in prices. This has important consequences...
Interesting. I wonder why. Is it installing a bunch of software before it executes the requested routine?
I’d be really angry at adults if I were a teenager. When I was a teenager, at least we could look up to the generation that took out Hitler and Tojo.
I remember the school-prayer debate from the 1990s. It ended with a “moment of silence” after the Pledge of Allegiance. Why are we doing this again? www.firstthings.com/how-to-bring...

Doesn’t the big blue book that got sent to nearly every political scientist and graduate student 15 years ago contain the answers?
Years ago, when working on my dissertation, I was struck by the salience of the "municipal ownership" controversy to roll-call voting in the 1930s.
