This is the root of anti-localization piranhas. They desperately want to “know Japanese” without having to actually study it, so therefore all translated media must be MTL (a tool they can use with two clicks; any harder would be scary) or dry, literal, spiritually comatose translations with notes.

Shoutout to a certain company, who, when I said that I needed either a short hiatus or longer deadline for a series I had already TL'd almost 20 volumes of because I was getting severely burnt out, simply reassigned the series and dropped me from the roster without so much as a farewell 🙃

I have many thoughts about it, but I believe his statement was oversimplifying. EN and JP both have tools in their linguistic toolkits that the other language doesn't. East Asian languages' plethora of 1st and 2nd-person pronouns is just one example of this among many. But... 🧵
