6/16/95. My mom and I saw Roy Ayers perform in Philly.

Tonight, I'll be on the radio playing a tribute show to Roy's music.

I'm up writing the story of how "Protect Ya Neck" first popped off in Philly in 1992.

Digging around in the archives for Wu stuff and I found an image of the old Philly Wu-Wear store on 3rd near South Street.

Editors:

I'm looking to place a piece about one of the great unknown jazz archives in existence.

The audio and video were recorded at Studio We, a loft space founded in 1968 and includes performances from Pharoah Sanders, Jimi Hendrix, Sun Ra etc.

DM me if interested. Thanks.

As someone who was 13 in 1994, I can confidently say that this record had me in a fucking chokehold as a kid. Lol

Ask The Ages Unreleased Sonny Sharrock piece

A few years back, I was hired to write a piece about the great avant-garde jazz guitarist, Sonny Sharrock.

For some reason, the piece was never published, so I just put it on my Substack. Check it out <3

The Avalanches The Avalanches' acclaimed debut album Since I Left You is composed almost entirely of samples from other records - but there's nothing lazy or unimaginative about their approach to recording...

I started going on and on about how Since I Left You changed my life (and may still do so!), but instead here's a great S.O.S. article from 2002 about how it was made. If you're interested in sampling or creative process, I highly recommend checking it out!

MARION BROWN, "You See What I'm Trying to Say" Documentary, New York, 1967 | THE JAZZ LIBRARY
MARION BROWN, "You See What I'm Trying to Say" Documentary, New York, 1967 | THE JAZZ LIBRARY YouTube video by The Jazz Library

A short film about the great Marion Brown, a musician who has become one of my obsessions these last eighteen months. Start with the first quartet album from '66 and just keep listening, it's all rock solid from there on in.
