i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.

i wish the political press were more conversant in american religion because there is a story to write about the inverted christianity that predominates among the new right, postliberal set

The burrito place we're visiting played The Tourist by Radiohead and Coventry Carol back to back. It's like they knew I was coming in.

"Panasonic has turned down a second multi-million dollar deal to open a battery plant in Oklahoma. This marks the third company to stray away from the state, as lawmakers work to figure out why Oklahoma can’t land these large deals."

Weird. Such a mystery.

Worth noting that the 'crisis' of kids socially transitioning at school without notifying their parents was almost entirely seeded by a NYT article. Even in conservative states, this was nowhere on the legislative agenda a year ago and now it's everywhere.

‘Dilemma Awaits Israel: What To Do When The Cease-Fire Expires’ on its jump page

After the truce went into effect, some displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza tried to walk to the northern part of the territory on Friday to check on their homes and relatives, despite warnings from Israeli officials not to go there. Israeli forces on the ground opened fire on them, according to witnesses, an Egyptian official and some of those injured. The Israeli military declined to answer questions about the shootings.

The literal last paragraph of the Times’ story on Israel’s “Dilemma” surrounding “What To Do When The Cease-Fire Expires” reports Israel violating the ceasefire, based on multiple sources including victims and eyewitnesses.

i have said this on here before but the idea here is that it should be illegal for the state to remedy racial inequality because said inequality is, in their view, a reflection of natural hierarchies

Opinion | Half the Police Force Quit. Crime Dropped. The charming town has a powerful tale to tell.

I have a piece in The NYT this morning. When a Minneapolis suburb hired a Black chief and assistant chief, over half the department quit. Yet the world didn’t end.

When cops would rather quit than respect the wishes of the communities they serve, maybe it’s okay to let them go.

Doctors Without Borders has been present in a lot of horrific conflict zones, & I'm wondering how what you're dealing with now is similar or different from other places you have experienced?

It's different. And yes, I have worked in conflict zones & they're always very nasty. But this is a particularly brutal thing because of the huge number of civilian casualties. And they can't escape it. They can't move. They're told to displace down south. But are we talking about just reducing the area from forty-five kilometres to twenty kilometres in length and trying to put two million people in there, which is ... It's just an extraordinary situation. And no, I haven't seen it.

They haven't stopped bombing. They're still bombing. They've got troops in there with tanks. And it's just consistent. It's well documented. We are seeing it all over the world in all the newspapers and television. So it's like people know exactly what's happening. And yet it doesn't stop. I haven't seen that before.

There is just no getting around this bit from the latest Chotiner interview. Doctors Without Borders has never seen this before: the number of civilian casualties, the inescapability of death, the fact that everyone knows what is happening BUT IT DOESN'T STOP.

Democratic Staffers Told To Let Constant Calls For Cease-Fire ‘Go To Voicemail’ Congressional staff say the mood inside the Capitol is tense, stifling and bewildering as members brush off their constituents’ outrage.

Congressional staffers say an onslaught of calls and emails asking for members to support a cease-fire has caught Dems completely off-guard.

“I’ve never seen such a disconnect between where voters and constituents are and where Congress is"

Sometimes I think about how, as a kid, when certain people’s names would come up, my grandmother would shake her head and say “oh he’s not doing well.” A lot of these people are still living. I wonder if they know my grandmother’s been shit talking their health for 20 years.

lots of people saying completely out of pocket stuff and almost all of it could be accounted for: most people do not think about power, actual power, and how it is applied and where, by whom and on whom. they don't know or they don't care
