Dead blackcap under the cloak of Erasmus (marble statue offered by the Lion's club of local businessmen to the city of Leuven in 1979). If I were writing a book about Humanism and the Anthropocene, this might be the cover image.

Ready for the concluding panel on ‘Refugees : Past & Present. Memory, museums, social responsibilities’ at In Flanders Fields Museum conference "Displaced". With Piet Chielens, Peter, @Karen Moeskops and Daniel Hadwiger, and moderated by @chrisdec71.bsky.social.
AttenhoveN, natuurlijk...
Highly topical and historically relevant conference at In Flanders Fields Museum, Ypres, about the experience of displacement during World War I and beyond. With a central role for Lotte van Attenhove, both as organizer and as presenter.
Daarom mijn tekst vandaag in De Morgen. www.demorgen.be/.../waarom-t...

Leonard Cohen's death 10 months later made things far worse. When hearing about it the next morning, I wrote this facebook-post about it. I am afraid we didn't do our best enough...
Revisiting “Remembering St. Martin’s Day in Tehran”
In light of the current developments in Iran, we would like to point out the blog “Remembering St. Martin’s Day in Tehran” (2022) by Roschanack Shaery-Yazdi. It offers a concise and thought-provoking reflection.

Héél herkenbaar!
Activism can be historical in several ways at the same time (New York today - picture by @sag111.bsky.social).
Nog eens een blogtekst geschreven voor @uantwerppohis.bsky.social. Over een aantal zaken die me mateloos boeien, en die plots op een verrassende wijze samenkwamen.

Heerlijk boek!

If there is one institute at the @uantwerpen.be truly committed to collaborating with partners from the Global South, it is the @iobua.bsky.social. In times of geopolitical change, we need an institute like this more than ever, but the Flemish government does not seem to understand that. #saveIOB
An intriguing reflection by my colleague Roschanack Shaery on her research stay in Japan. How a halal certificate in a fancy Italian restaurant in Tokyo made her reflect on Western attitudes toward the Muslim world.

That's a question for @chrislesliephoto.bsky.social. We show it at @uantwerpen.be because it is one of the monuments we visit during our student excursions to Bosnia-Herzegovina, and because it tells so much about Europe's past, present and future.
Recently in premiere at the Sarajevo Film Festival, on 9 October to be seen at the @uantwerpen.be: @chrislesliephoto.bsky.social's documentary film about the Partisan Memorial Cemetery in Mostar. All information and possibility to register (for free) via this link:

Quite aware that Netanyahu and co are not really sensitive to symbolic actions in small Belgian villages, but they remain meaningful nonetheless. www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/20...
Let's not forget Ukraine.
And that's why we should support organizations like @standing-together.bsky.social
At least 88 Palestinians were killed in the last 24 hours alone by the Israeli military in Gaza, from the bombing of a bakery, to shootings at Palestinians waiting for aid, to strikes on their residential tents and shelters – and the slow death of hunger. (2/3)
Just read their words. These are the voices of Palestinians in Gaza, describing in real time the horror of living under Israeli military’s bombs.

Very good that this @standing-together.bsky.social-activist bluntly calls his government what it is: fascist. That kind of government - and those who support its genocidal policies - should be sanctioned and boycotted. But those who bravely resist it should receive all our support.
