I'm also UK and yeah it's not good, businesses auto adding a service charge on and then asking if you'd like to tip, it's a joke really. What the hell is a service charge, just increase your prices

You don't need tipping if businesses pay a respectable wage, for someone who isn't American it feels absurd that it's expected.

I tip for exceptional service, if you are expected to tip then people have no motivator to give good service
