The problem with Star Wars is that you watch it when you're 11, and your imagination goes wild wondering what else could be out there in this cool sci-fi universe. But then the franchise keeps going and the best thing they could come up with is, you know, the same stuff you've already seen.
I also learned a lot about how to set up art for implementing in the game. This was a mockup of the player select screen, which mostly looks the same in the final game, but there are many minor issues I have with it that we just didn’t have the time to fix.
I’ve never really had to do background before so this was a learning experience, but it definitely improved my rendering skills greatly. I also learned a lot about animating in clip studio paint, mainly how to use folders within animation folders to make each frame have multiple layers.
There were 3 stages created for the game, the sewers of slumlock, the desert of Planet X-826, and the royal court of the Space King, who presides in the Piviton mothership (Yes that’s a reference to pivot animation software, thanks for noticing). Every one of those little guys was animated by me!
Basically there’s cold and warm colored stick figures that are battling to experience “lavendic ascension” and become purple.
The year is 3045, stickmen have long since become the dominant people across the galaxy. The rich live in luxury from their space ships, while the poor toil below on the planets, mining the resources needed to fuel the royal ships. The only hope for ascension is the one thing the royals love:
There’s also lore in the game because it needed art direction and I thought it would be funny if this ridiculous game about stick figures playing basketball whilst being fired at by drones had serious lore.
I did about 90% of the art for the final game, which includes a lot of stills like these, and all the stick figure animations.
I joined the project a few months into development, with a local hobbyist game dev, and over the next 9 months it transformed into what you see today!
