This is a sick instrumental garage rock album but also is a collab between the bands Gong Gong Gong & Mong Tong, which is just fun to say.

I don’t care that you added the name of some painter to your prompt so that it generates the exact aesthetic you’re imagining for your dungeon synth album. If you put visual slop up front, I have to approach your music as potentially audio slop.

If you use AI art for your album/ep/single cover, you force me to question if you are a real musician or just the output of a prompt. It’s that simple. If you want me to spend time with your project, you can’t just put the equivalent of fruit island on the cover and call it a day.

imagine the space jockey scene, but instead they find a giant hamster wheel rube goldberg machine. poor wacky whimsical aliens slumped over the controls, gaping hole in their chest, crumbling white gloves and decaying rubber hose arms.

It will be less “just press the slop button” and more “we have a slop guy we can call.” And in some (but not all) cases, slop will still make financial sense to companies.

What I see in the future is that data center / api driven AI will be way less common because it will simply be too expensive. But running AI locally will still be possible, and I see “budget” AI services that can produce low-quality results filling in the gap left by ChatGPT et al.

BUT: GenAI is not going away. Especially in writing/illustration. We’ve seen how many consumers just don’t mind “slop.” And that means that even in a post-crash world it will still be viable. Creating a culture that rejects it is still important.

Also: AI as an industry is crashing. AI usage will likely never be cheaper than it is now. You don’t need to plan for a future where AI is even more prevalent than it is now, because evidence points to that being mathematically impossible. If this one surprises you, listen to @edzitron.com

For one, there is nothing an AI can generate that a human cannot (not vice versa.) You can never definitively prove anything is AI, you can only strongly suspect. Because this, the best we can hope for or expect is for creators to pledge to not use it. No one can ever certify more than that.

I think every anti-AI person needs to be educated about the actual workings of AI as much as you can stomach. To demystify it. To understand how we can (and cannot) guard against it.

I see AI discourse has re-ignited today on TTRPG bluesky. I don’t post much so I have no pull here, but I’d like to share some perspectives that I think are important and not broadly shared.

As a buyer of games, I see your symbol a lot of places now. I should start taking photos. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it on at least one non-ttrpg game, so I think it is gaining traction.
