From Gaza to now Iran and Lebanon, Israel is expanding its testing ground for AI-enabled military technology in terrifying ways.

An excerpt from the part of our book where we mustered all of our self-control and … took the category of “woke mind virus“ seriously.
Turns out it’s kind of revealing about how Musk and his brethren in the Silicon Valley leadership class see politics.

I’m $ure there’$ a rea$onable explanation.
Tremendous good news for American consumers, local TV journalists and also much-needed pushback against FCC Chairman Carr’s abuse-of-power.

Great write-up by @nicholsuprising.bsky.social of Mamdani’s promise of old-school “sewer socialism” in the 21st century. Historically, this political project gained significant support in places like Milwaukee and could do so again in communities across the U.S. www.thenation.com/article/poli...
Congress banned Big Tech from working with TikTok over national security concerns.
Then Apple, Google, and Microsoft went to DOJ and asked for assurances they wouldn’t be prosecuted for… working with TikTok anyway.
New docs show they got that protection.

Based on calculations of potentials costs for implementing different journalistic models, we conclude that if nonprofit news media is to move beyond a small-scale corrective, permanent public funding will be necessary for sustaining local journalism at scale. @miccenter.bsky.social @asc.upenn.edu

An abstract of a new journal article that concludes democratic society requires public funding for local journalism at scale.
Very excited about this new journal article with @davidberman.bsky.social and Aaron Hyzen that examines Pennsylvania's nonprofit news ecosystem and makes the distinction between journalism reforms that focus on restoration vs. transformation. Link to the PDF: victorpickard.com/wp-content/u...
Some good news for my hometown paper.

Some good news for my hometown paper.
With 98.2% of the vote counted, Magyar/TISZA are on 52.6% & Orban/FIDESZ on 39.0%.
Now, imagine what those numbers would be had Orban not had near-complete control of the Hungarian media and government bureaucracy, not to mention his 16 years of silencing civil society and political opposition.
A caricature of state propaganda.
A caricature of state propaganda.
Dems backed Chris Taylor, a former Planned Parenthood lawyer, legislator and bold progressive, for WI Supreme Court. Against the GOP’s pick, Taylor preached economic, social and racial justice, and WON A LANDSLIDE — carrying 42 or 72 counties.
There are huge lessons here for Dems and progressives.

Good overview by @karlbode.com: "Trump Attacks On Public Media Blocked By Judge (But It’s Too Little, Too Late)." www.techdirt.com/2026/04/08/t...
The White House’s AI framework sidelines concerns about algorithmic bias and discrimination, casting efforts to mitigate those harms as ideological interference, argues Genevieve Smith. Treating AI as “neutral” doesn’t eliminate harm; it risks scaling inequality under the guise of objectivity.
Over the past 48 hours, Trump's rants have called for the genocidal eradication of Persian civilization and mocked an entire religion, while reveling in the president's eagerness to commit war crimes on a global scale.
Free Press' @timkarr.bsky.social on what media capitulation has cost us:
A fantastic discussion with @ajbauer.bsky.social about the history and consequences of the myth (in Barthes’s sense) of the liberal media in shaping the US public sphere, building on @victorpickard.bsky.social’s work. By @perrybaconjr.bsky.social and @thenewrepublic.bsky.social
Given this morning's unhinged missive, this piece by @sulliview.bsky.social is even more spot-on. margaretsullivan.substack.com/p/how-the-me...

@nicholsuprising.bsky.social reminds us: "There’s a compelling argument to be made that to be a modern Luddite is to be on the right side of history—even if history has not been particularly kind to the Luddites."
This is an actual post. This is not funny. This is beyond desperate. This is a deeply unwell man who doesn’t belong anywhere near the levers of power. Every member of his cabinet and Congress is complicit in not demanding his removal now.

It’s cool to see journalists building their own discovery tools on their own terms, outside of Big Tech platforms.
