UK hydropower breakthrough could unlock clean energy in once unfeasible locations
UK hydropower breakthrough could unlock clean energy in once unfeasible locations YouTube video by CNA

A game-changing innovation in hydropower could make it possible to generate and store clean energy on ordinary hills – not just mountains or dams. Engineers in southwest England are testing a new approach that replaces water with a dense, mineral-rich liquid. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz4B...

Matheson-area First Nation taking Ontario to court over river dam safety A court hearing is scheduled for July 16 and 17

First Nations argue Ontario’s regulatory framework fails to properly consult Indigenous communities about dam operations and doesn't provide sufficient oversight of dam safety, leaving AAN vulnerable to risks such as a 2023 breach at Twin Falls Generating Station www.timminstoday.com/local-news/m...

Restoration Update: In the Wake of Klamath Dam Removal • The Revelator Conservation crews have helped plant and seed thousands of native trees and other vegetation. Salmon have responded in kind.

Two years ago crews punched holes in three dams on the Klamath River in California and southern Oregon. Waters held back for decades rushed free. It wasn’t pretty: For weeks, a river of chocolate milk cut through a raw, monotone landscape of glistening, sticky mud. therevelator.org/klamath-rest...

How Does Doug Ford Plan to Finance His $400 Billion Nuclear Ambitions? Environmental policy professor Mark Winfield walks us through the various ways Ontario could finance the $400 billion cost of expanding nuclear power in the province.

It goes way beyond nuclear costs. The government’s Energy Superpower agenda is advancing over 30 new and upgraded transmission line projects across Ontario and procuring risky new hydroelectric projects under long-term contracts and ratepayer exposure. www.theenergymix.com/how-does-dou...

‘River has cut its own course’: Temporary dam built to protect flood ravaged homes in Pinkerton It’s been just over a week since the Teeswater River decided to cut its own path through the hamlet of Pinkerton, leaving several homes underwater.

On March 12, heavy rainfall coupled with a large snowmelt powered the Teeswater River to cut a massive hole in a privately owned hydroelectric earthen dam on the edge of Pinkerton. Dam owners carry a huge liability risk when their dams fail. www.ctvnews.ca/london/artic...

Hamilton, Sarnia residents file formal request for Ontario to fix its 'broken' air pollution policy | CBC News The cumulative effects policy is supposed to limit the amount of harmful carcinogens emitted by industry in the Hamilton and Sarnia areas. But it's not working, say environmental advocates.

Many facilities are granted a "patchwork of exemptions that prioritizes flexibility for polluters over consistent protection for people," said Borsuk. Under these exemptions, industries are allowed to emit above the province's air regulations. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Dams are beginning to collapse at a historic rate in Europe, rivers are being freed after decades of blockage, more than 500 barriers have been removed in a single year, almost 3.000 kilometers are flowing freely again, and an environmental movement is gaining momentum to reshape the future of water on the continent. In Europe, dam dismantling reached a new level in 2024: 542 barriers were removed in 23 countries, an 11% jump compared to the previous year, restoring free flow to more than 2.900 kilometers of rivers and reigniting a continent-wide environmental movement. Old dams and reservoirs, many of them obsolete, began to disappear from the map at an unusual pace, opening space for nature to resume processes interrupted for decades.

Germany is removing more than 120 small dams, reconnecting hundreds of kilometers of rivers, and betting on the return of salmon and eels after a century of disruption.

Among the symbols of this rebirth are long-distance migratory fish, especially the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and European eel (Anguilla anguilla). Both were abundant in Germany until the end of the 19th century, but barriers reduced their populations. en.clickpetroleoegas.com.br/alemanha-rem...
