As a humble podcaster, it’s good to see this headline. You feel immense pressure to get on the video pod train, but it’s so fucking expensive to do - which feels like the complete antithesis of what podcasting was supposed to be; a chance for the indies to have a shot.

Funnily enough I could see Wheezing Groaning Sound adding visuals for the “what was on” segment but I fear it would rob it of the nostalgic mystique and would certainly negatively impact the trio’s comedic improvisations.

Basically - audio only is beautiful. Don’t change!

I suspect podcasts doing this are chasing the likes of JRE which had video from its inception (however rudimentary) and has become more sophisticated - looking up videos or text is part of its grammar. You cannot just bolt it on without proper budget or re conceptualising the show’s format.

The football podcast I listen to from The Athletic has gone to video. It’s utterly fucking pointless. They are sat in a room. Early episodes they were sat in front of cheap wood boards! There is no visual grammar whatsoever. They apologise when they can’t do video - just feel sorry for them!

The concept of the BBC DG being Editor-in-chief - and therefore expected to resign quickly at the first sign of big trouble seems like a bad design.

First of all, to lump that in with the role’s huge scope is excessive.

Second, it leaves the Corporation leaderless just at the point it needs one.

I have a vested interest interest in this subject but…. I liked SUPERMAN but agree it’s a bit flawed (misleading title) but I did think F1 was a beautifully made summer blockbuster.

Middle-aged men are in crisis - Paul Rudd's new film Friendship gets it By satirising traditional masculinity, the film shows us a lot about how men do - and don't - make friends

For @theipaper.com I wrote some thoughts about the brilliantly dark new A24 joint Friendship, which was out in the UK on Friday, and which has moments that recall Scorsese's King of Comedy in their comic discomfort. It's vis-a-vis the male loneliness epidemic:

Literally watching the same film right now (Amazon ad break) Young fiancée says to him “I wanna go dancing!” At 57 that’s got to be the last thing he wants to hear.

Same. A big part of it is admiring Alan’s insane dedication to going through with it.

Watching in a friend’s flat in Chiswick in 2002. Couldn’t breathe.
