Access to the talks is one thing. The key thing for me as a hearing person is the networking aspect. Mixing with all the attendees is easy for me as a hearing person, but I never feel comfortable doing this when my deaf colleagues do not have similar access to the social aspects of the conference.

Also sign languages feature quite often in presentations at Evolang conferences, but Evolang is also no closer to providing a truly inclusive situation for deaf participants. I'm very grateful to my colleague Neil Fox who presented on behalf of our team: the only deaf attendee to my knowledge 2/2
I love the Evolang conferences, but I didn't attend this year, partly because of 30 years of attending academic conferences, I'm increasingly finding the travel and stress associated with attending conferences less rewarding than in the past. 1/2
Yes I filmed this a few hours ago: hence the reference to mornings 🤣
Good morning from England- happy Auslan Day, Australia!
Auslan is the majority sign language of Australia’s deaf community, related to British Sign Language
Each 13th April is celebrated as ‘Auslan Day’ in recognition of the publication of the first dictionary of the language on this day in 1989
The best combo!
Congratulations! How are you going to approach this? Using corpus data?
Not gonna lie: I'm reviewing an article in which Dutch Sign Language or NGT (Nederlandse Gebarentaal) was erroneously referred to as NGL and for some reason this made me actual lol.
I will be giving a class 'Towards a corpus linguistics of sign languages' - everyone is welcome.
This looks really good!

The notion of "correct" and "incorrect" language stems from classism and racism (and is in many cases still fueled by it). 🐦🐦
I continue to gawp at the stupidity of anyone / any city that believes these are the answer to *anything*.

I hear both - they haven't gone away even if the discourse about them has quietened down.
Not. All. Linguists. John. :-)
This makes me happy to see! This site describes the revitalisation of the language of the Dharug people, the traditional owners of the Sydney region in Australia where I was born and grew up. bayala.net.au/about/
Dialects are a natural result of how humans live with each other in communities, and they are a wonderful reflection of our history and sense of identity.

Oh I always just thought it was related to the use of the apparent time hypothesis approach from sociolinguistics, adapted to 'emerging' sign languages.
Yes, I fingerspell A-R-G (with two hands obvs).
I don't know that there is anything, according to Google Scholar anyway.
Great! Maybe you can share the link to the BUCU WhatsApp group?
Can you give an example?
Is there a name for when a method that was originally linked to natural phenomenon takes on a life of its own in the history of disciplines? Specifically that the motivation for using is that it's been used elsewhere?

Public talk on accent bias in HE, led by Christian Ilbury from the University of Edinburgh, at the University of Birmingham, UK, at 6pm on 29th April.
I have long been aware that our students (and staff) who speak with local accents experience discrimination.

For most people, a Creole is a broken version of another language. This couldn't be further from the truth. This is an extensive overview of the Haitian Creole language!

SciTechDaily has reported on our paper "The ‘design features’ of language revisited" in @cp-trendscognsci.bsky.social. One short correction to the reporting is that Hockett didn't claim that there is "a set of uniquely human design features" (and we don't claim he did) 1/ #language #linguistics
Me: I understand and appreciate the point that Martin is trying to make about 'neutrality' here.
Also me: Not sure about the 'neutrality' of academia point - don't know if such a position is even possible or desirable.

Tweet from Alexander Clark: I was explaining at dinner that linguists disagree radically about almost everything and one person said so what do they actually agree about? Just that languages exist? And I was like: well you might want to sit down for this
