Johnny Briggs standing at a podium set up just in front of home plate on the baseball field that bears his name. His wife, Renvy, is to his left. His youngest son, Julian, stands to his right. The American and New Jersey flags are behind them. A scoreboard reading “Johnny Briggs Athletic Field” sits over the right field wall.

Today, Paterson, NJ, celebrated native son and MLB veteran Johnny Briggs (Phillies, Brewers, Twins) by restoring and rededicating the athletic field that bears his name. The field will be used by the Kennedy HS softball team and for Little League games.

These were the first 12 Black or Afro-Latino players to appear in the AL/NL.
Integration was not quick. The gap between Jackie Robinson (#1) and Sam Jethroe (#12) was:
1,099 days, or
3 years and 3 days
If you're only going to read one thing today, make it this.
It's nice how Paterson celebrates its own and has been doing a lot to rehabilitate its parks and fields. www.mlb.com/news/field-d...

"Come On, Play Ball With Me, Dearie"; as sung in Flo Ziegfeld Jr's annual review "Follies of 1909." The girls and the costumes are great, but that backdrop is a really good depiction of the Polo Grounds before the fire of 1911.

Larry Doby deserves an annual day of honor! Will be wonderful when pleas like this no longer need to be made. Thank you, @bpleskoff.bsky.social for being the latest to write about the slight.
I'll be presenting about Col. Frank Leslie Smith (1867-1950) at the Dwight Historical Society, 119 W. Main Street, Dwight, IL on Monday, April 20, 2026. The event is free, but donations are always encouraged. dwighthistory.org
For this week's newsletter, I wrote about Gene Bearden, the hero of the Cleveland Indians' 1948 championship, and also someone who fabricated his wartime experience. It's a vexing case of stolen valor that even I fell for. substack.com/home/post/p-...

For the evening crowd, a more probing piece that tries to understand why the hero of the 1948 World Series lied about his service during World War II.
Ordinarily one would say that 80 years was a good run. Yet we could have used a whole lot more of Davey Lopes, his wisdom, his dedication to craft, the way he honored friends, family, culture, team and teamwork. We needed at least 80 more years with you, Davey. God bless. Rest in power, my friend.

5 months ago Braylen Wimmer had a seizure on his way to a Fall League game, and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. 18 days later, he underwent a craniotomy. Last night, Wimmer started in centerfield for the Yard Goats, and scored a run at the plate. That's guts. That's perseverance 🙌
