UK government to increase heat pump grants to £9000 for those with oil and LPG heating. Generous for sure but fully closes the risk of a cost gap and may even provide a small excess for those with small homes (typically the least well off). (1/2)

Happily, the government has been listening to Sam.
Ed Miliband will be doubling down on clean energy today (giving a speech at 11) announcing moves to shift more legacy renewables on to Contracts for Difference…

This is a good read by @samalvis.bsky.social, and this is basically what I think on the whole “decoupling gas and electricity prices” thing.
The first best answer is “build more renewables and flex”, and we’re making a lot of progress on that
“If you break the link between gas and electricity, you’ll probably save consumers a lot of money.”
Gas sets the electricity price, so wind and nuclear are sold at higher gas-driven rates, cutting that link could lower bills.

The Scottish Parliament election is being fought in the shadow of devastating job losses at Grangemouth refinery, the Mossmorran petrochemicals complex and offshore. Broken energy promises and policy failure is recruiting voters to Reform. I've written for Renewal on Scotland's unjust transition.
It's going to be even worse the next time they appoint Peter Mandelson

Rewatched Speed this weekend. Is it the best action movie ever?
Rachel Reeves managed to wipe several million off SSE's share price on Thursday with a loose promise to decouple electricity and gas prices. Why? And what might she announce this week? 🧵1/6

An impressive set of recommendations to respond to the Hormuz crisis from the EU. I’m not clear whether they’ll be adopted by member states. If they are, I think the EU could be drastically less reliant on fossil fuels within a few years. Can the UK follow suit?

The first community-owned battery investment scheme is here, helping store excess solar power and use it when it’s needed most ⚡️
💡 Powered by local investment, the Ray Valley solar park already supports 7,000 homes, and now it’s getting even smarter 🔋
Oh good. Tesla are gamifying their dangerous, unregulated self-driving technology
As of today the NFT of Jack Dorsey's first tweet is worth an estimated $10 so that must be some comfort.
Ensuring people and communities benefit from transitions is really important if this unfolding energy revolution is to be remembered for all the right reasons.

The UK government’s response to the energy crisis has been broadly sensible so far, but we’re still yet to see anything like this - targeted funding to accelerate the pace of electrification.
Is this 1D chess?

On brand, but still unreal...
The French government has announced the measures of its plan to accelerate electrification:
- a ban on gas boilers in new houses from the end of 2026
- increased support for replacing old heating with heat pumps
- 100 regions will pilot comprehensive heat transition plans to phase out gas by 2030
That is objectively a very funny phrase.
