Today is a good day to remind you that none of the classic vote studies thought very highly of women's political competence.

Given the almost universal malaise of liberal democracies, it amazes me that people still think that the way out is institutional reform. Mainstream parties have failed in all systems and far-right parties have succeeded in all systems. More importantly, people are dissatisfied in all systems.

Research article: "The Rise of Women Vice-Presidential Candidates in Latin America" by Adrián Pignataro. Abstract begins: The literature on vice presidencies fails to explain the women’s inclusion as vice-presidential candidates, as the strategies of ticket balancing predict a higher number of female running mates than what is observed. Based on theories of gender representation, this study develops hypotheses about the inclusion of women as vice-presidential candidates and tests them using an original dataset comprising 471 presidential tickets from Latin America (1978–2022), a region where women’s representation has expanded. The analysis reveals that small and left-wing parties nominate more women as vice presidents than major and right-wing parties. Although female vice-presidential candidates tend to have less political experience than their male presidential counterparts, they often add a diverse and complementary policy expertise to the ticket.

Yet most women VPs bring policy expertise to the ticket—often complementing the profile of the presidential candidate. I provide examples of several women vice presidents who played active roles in their administrations, many of whom also served as cabinet ministers.

I also examine the credentials of women vice-presidential candidates compared to presidential candidates. As expected from a different and less prestigious position, women VP candidates tend to have less political experience than male presidential candidates.

The statistical models show that smaller and left-wing parties are more likely to nominate women as vice presidents. However, legislative gender quotas and the % of women in parliament do not show a diffusion effect on VP nominations.

The article focuses on the question: why do parties nominate women to the vice presidency? As traditional ticket-balancing approaches are insufficient, I build hypotheses using the literature on female representation in cabinets, legislatures, and the presidency.
