solidarity with Jairo and all colleagues who use their voice to challenge colonial logics and legacies in the very universities that we work and teach in. Jairo's case reminds us that job offers and tenure decisions are not objective assessments but political decisions.
Less than two years ago, Texas Tech University suspended me for speaking out against genocide. Today I found out I was denied tenure.
I’ll never regret speaking out against genocide. These institutions on the other hand are complicit and active participants.
Dems treated both viruses, covid and fascism, the exact same way.

Ok, I have a minute, let's do this. Our lab is interested in contaminants found in Alaskan waters and identifying microbes from a fish native to Alaska, three-spine stickleback, to use in bioremediation in cold water lakes. Sarah was interested in microplastics, which I wasn't really studying. 1/n

At 150 nautical miles from Gaza, about 20 drones are hovering overhead. Multiple naval vessels have been spotted, with reports of an imminent interception by Israeli vessels.

The war on terror is a declaration of war against all those who are willing to stand in solidarity with Palestine.
People losing their jobs reveals the authoritarian, fascist, & colonial foundations of democracies, including their educational institutions.

#IndigenousPeoplesDay is Monday. My challenge to non-Natives: dig into the history of the people who were displaced from your land, learn about the history of how they were displaced, find out where they are now, and support them financially or by protesting with them. Go beyond platitudes.
Schell et al. 2020 has changed how I think about and conduct my work! Relevant for all, especially an urban ecology class 🐛🐛🐛
Something climate activists who are ignoring COVID need to know: Working to reduce the harm of current pandemics, and preparing for future pandemics, is a key component of climate adaptation. Health justice isn't a distraction. The climate crisis IS a public health crisis.
Site says it’s sold out online (😭) — this is so hype though, best of luck!

Excited to share this culturally relevant & inclusive environmental microbiome program to train the future workforce of Indigenous students in comp bio/genomics/computing. Many years in the making w/awesome support from folks at FLC, CU, CSHL & tribal elders. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Being an Indigenous faculty member is tough. I have the normal faculty role/expectations & this abyss of invisible labor. Just sitting w/my thoughts after lab work/teaching & a heavy emo institutional change discussion. Imagining how to write this in my tenure & promotion pkg.
Microbes are collectively one of the biggest forces shaping Earth, and yet undergraduate #geology students typically receive little training in microbiology. My new open access textbook seeks to help. “Microbiology for Earth Scientists” is freely available here newprairiepress.org/ebooks/53/
