yes, that’s how society works. my taxes go towards all sorts of shit i don’t use personally, for the public betterment. if you don’t want to pay into society, feel free to go into the woods and live as a sovereign citizen.

People who don’t have children still exist in society and will have to deal with those children whether they like it or not, so it benefits them to give those kids everything they need to become positive members of society. Same reason we have public schools. Rising tides lift all boats etc etc

School is an example of a social hood that reduces crime and increases life expectancy. 3-k childcare is (and indeed even early infancy childcare) is part of that, and should be supported as a public good. At scale, it is far more affordable to families & society than forcing everybody to find own.

Isn't that what the taxes are already for though?? Or is it cheaper in your eyes for everyone to pay their own fees (which is usually higher when out of pocket)?? Genuinely curious

Mayor Mamdani and a group of children hold hands while running through red tape in a hallway.

Mayor Mamdani and a group of children hold hands while running through red tape in a hallway.

For too long, bureaucracy kept 7 child care centers across our city empty — spaces that should have been alive with laughter instead collected dust.

We've run through that red tape. This fall, all 7 will open their doors, bringing an additional 240 free 3-K seats & real relief to working families.

I spent years of my life thinking cayenne was really hot because it was described to me in childhood by someone as akin to fire and it did not occur to me that maybe a midwesterner was not a good source on what is mad spicy

Yet again I remind everyone (as Elizabeth does in her very next tweet) that "foreigners are corrupting our pure blood with weakness & disease" is Fascism 101. Not some variant, not some metaphorically similar thing, not some echo -- the thing itself.

I never got the Disney cartoon “Motor Mania” until I started biking and walking most places.

The transformation that happens for the vast majority of drivers when they get behind the wheel of their powerful mobile multi-ton living room is almost supernatural (it’s not, but it feels that way).

Time for my annual reminder that no non-American editor has _ever_ won a Best Professional Editor Hugo award. Which is insane.

Yes, not even one single British editor, despite many high-profile repeat finalists.

So full on eugenics then. no one is safe because disability, cancer, illness, mass disabling events can impact anyone. Aging is a disabling event btw. It doesn't have to be a pandemic. Also illness and disability aren't moral issues and can't be solved by snake oil, sunlight, or veggies.

This iconic music video was produced by Aardman Animations, with one of the animators being Nick Park, the future creator of Wallace & Gromit www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJWJ...

Oh my God a Lodestar slate entirely YA books! And one of them is younger YA with a 13yo protagonist! Great job, voters. This like never happens.

My husband is all about the painting. I think he should do painting reels.

Exercising your empathy to experience other people’s joy is such an underrated feature of humans.

"How's your internet?" Is a regular discussion in my household. I love this tip!

I also do this with my RSS feeds

The nice thing is you get to connect with your partner in new ways and you might learn something new.

Keep that algo fresh, babes!

Also it can be good for breaking out of the dissociative scrolling to run to show your partner or have them initiate a convo.

This is advice for those of us who are terminally online, so if you’re already ä completely actuated human, you can scroll on by this without being smug. ;)

Like watching WarHammer painters talk about their pile of grey shame (unpainted minis) is so much better than a weight loss grifter trying to shame your body’s birthing artifacts.

Experience somebody else’s shame instead.

But seriously, it’s a good chance to connect with your partner.

If you are partnered and terminally online like spouse and I are, may I recommend that you seed your algorithm with some videos of the thing your spouse likes that you are maybe only 10% into.

Because a) it keeps your own algo from being too one note & b) gives you opportunity to send to spouse

RFK Jr. just said HHS is "cleaning up the risk pool" (i.e., people who are unhealthy) to bring down healthcare costs.

So, he's said everyone with a chronic, treatable illness (like diabetes) deserves to be cleansed from society.

Aktion T4 time.
