“Palantir’s manifesto, which embraces AI state surveillance of citizens along with national service in the USA, is either a parody of a RoboCop film, or a disturbing narcissistic rant from an arrogant organisation,” said Martin Wrigley, a Lib Dem MP & member of the HofC science & technology SC

A cherry blossom tree beginning to bloom. It stands in a formal garden but in a patch where the grass has been allowed to grow long and daffodils bloom. In the background we see steps to another garden area and tended borders full of greenery.

Our gardeners have called it, we're in for a blossom burst.

Rain gave gardens the best start to the year with the recent bursts of sunshine driving the blossom season forward. We're now hoping for a calm, frost-free period to give beautiful extended displays.

Cap on overseas gifts risks Farage’s funding…

Extracts:

Political donations from Britons living abroad will be capped — a decision that could cut off Reform UK’s biggest donor.

Steve Reed, the communities secretary, said it would not be “fair” to continue to allow Reform to accept “gamechanging” donations from people based overseas.

Nigel Farage’s party accused Labour of “choking off legal funding for its main rival” after the decision, which limits donations from overseas Britons to £100,000 a year. Donations made with cryptocurrency will also be outlawed.

Both rules will take effect immediately.

Christopher Harborne, a Britishborn tycoon who lives in Thailand, donated £9 million to Reform in December, the largest donation to British politics from a living person. Harborne would be unlikely to qualify for such sizeable donations under the new rules, government sources said.

The restrictions were announced after a review from Philip Rycroft, a former senior civil servant, into foreign interference in British democracy.

Zia Yusuf, Reform’s home affairs spokesman, called Rycroft a “leftist political activist” and vowed to open an investigation into his background if the party wins power.

“This is a dark day for Britain,” Yusuf said. “Reform receives a large, perfectly lawful donation from a British citizen and Labour responds by rushing through a new law to prohibit him from making such a donation again. This is how fast the machinery of government moves when it wants to protect itself … This Starmer regime is authoritarian.”

Reed said that Rycroft was raising a “question of fairness”. He said: “Is it fair that a British national who chooses to live permanently abroad, who chooses to pay their taxes only abroad and not in the UK can make donations so big that they are game-changing for British democracy?”

Sports grounds and green spaces are vital for local communities. Removing Sport England from the planning process risks more playing fields being built on. The government must reconsider this short-sighted decision.

Good to see Sadiq Khan joining Wes Streeting and David Lammy in finally catching up with the Lib Dems on the need for a UK–EU customs union.

We have led the way, won the vote in Parliament and will now fight to make sure Downing Street wakes up to the damage done by Brexit too.

As more Government ministers are agreeing that alignment with the EU is in the country's national interest, and public support is increasing, it's clear that we must make repairing our relationship with Europe a priority. However, we must not stop at alignment, and instead rejoin key initiatives.

Ed Davey Speech Clip:

There is a future for Britain that I
can see clearly: Fair, free and open.

Where hard work is rewarded and aspiration is real. Secure at home
and respected abroad.

A country that tells its children:
whoever you are, wherever you are from – here you can succeed and thrive.

That Britain is possible.
It is not a fantasy. It is a choice.

A choice between hope and fear.

Between opening ourselves up and closing ourselves off. Between becoming Trump's America – and being proudly, defiantly, eccentrically British.

The Liberal Democrats choose hope. We choose openness. We choose the Britain that we love and the values that we share.

And we will fight – with everything we have – for the country we know is possible.

Strip away Farage's insults and outrage and there's nothing there but a desperation to turn the UK into his version of Trump's America.

We will talk Britain up, not down, because we know how special our country can be.

Britain’s nuclear deterrent must be genuinely ours – not dependent on Trump or whoever his successor may be. Trump has proven we can’t rely on America as a dependable ally.

We have the best scientists, engineers, and builders. So let’s build our own independent nuclear deterrent. Made in Britain.

Last week Trump said he didn't need Britain's help because he'd already won this war. So we mustn't let him push the UK around now.

Any decision on the deployment of our Armed Forces should be made in the UK's national interest and subject to a vote in Parliament.

Reform’s Richard Tice avoided nearly £600,000 in tax The deputy leader’s property company paid nothing in corporation tax on multimillion-pound profits for most of 2018-21

"...his property company paid nothing in corporation tax on its multimillion-pound profits for most of 2018 to 2021."

It's incredibly clear who Reform UK really fight for and it's not the British people.
