2. In terms of FOSS, I don't think competition really gets in our way — it's the burden of ownership. We can agree to come together and build something, but the long run of FOSS projects can be depressing (one star reviews, demands for free help), and it seems less stressful to just... not.

1. Dynamics of venture capital mean that startups try to use news as a growth accelerator. If they succeed they become too expensive for news or worse, try to incept the news. Failure is by design much more common. Maybe the worst outcome is acquisition.
