Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Scientists breathe new life into climate website after shutdown under Trump
Climate.gov, which went dark this summer, set to be revived by volunteers as climate.us with expanded mission
“This is information that the taxpayers have already paid for,” said @relindsey.bsky.social. “This administration is trying to hide it and take it away from us. It’s an abuse of government. It’s a waste of resources. People should be indignant.”

Our site is located in Fujian Province, southeastern China, where you can find the best oolong and jasmine teas. It is a hilly area, challenging but interesting for studying fluxes over complex terrain. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

Just submitted the proposal to be a host for the 2026 FLUXNET Secondment Program. We welcome early-career flux scientists to join us in studying flux measurements in mountain forests.

I study subtropical forest ecology in China. I'd like to be added, thanks :)

Same plot as before but with the SSP CO2 concentration data. This doesn't feel quite so dramatic given that we are mostly under the curve, but obviously what's not great is the extent to which we have closed that gap in the last 3 years.

Had same experiences before, totally understood your feeling. It is sad that people think in different directions (or act at different pace). Sometimes so difficult to build an agreement. Maybe just leave it for the weekend and rethink it on Monday. You may then find a solution....

From mapping forest function and disturbances, exploring forest dynamics to mortality from drought, 2024 has seen several analyses we've been working on for years finally come out. Here's a quick summary of them, @julenastigarraga.bsky.social @n-acil.bsky.social @daijunliu.bsky.social

I don't know if I could also be attracted by the title of 'thinking like a mountain' (I like it, too, though). I bought the book, read it, and several years later when I decided to quit my job to pursue a phd, I changed my major to ecology.

I read this letter from the Aldo Leopold Foundation several years ago. It moved me and reminded me of my own experience. When I was still a student in Chemistry, one day wandering in a bookstore, my eye was caught by the word 'Almanac' (even in Chinese). I had little thought about ecology back then.

"... can I fully mourn the loss of something that I never experienced myself?" This reminds me of the question I have been thinking about my home, an even more difficult case-when living in remote places with beautiful landscapes (forests/grasslands...) is related to poverty

But the interesting part is that my colleagues (we went for the visa interview together as a group) received their visa the next day after the interview.

Had thought my first post would be happy group pictures of reunion with friends and the crowds in the poster hall or convention center... but it comes this sad post.

I should have been packing and preparing for tomorrow morning's flight to #AGU24, but my visa application has been stuck at the 'Approved' status since Nov. 25 and not 'issued' yet for some (hard-to-imagine) background check. Had to cancell the flight, hotel room reservation, and withdraw abstract..
