I never get sick, but this made me realise, there is no one there for me if I am and no backup in emergencies for him.

No amount of explaining can help him understand this shitty predicament. He is just angry someone asked him to do something he didn’t want.

And I just cried.

And he had a really cranky moment. I also said the food needed to heated properly. He fully got the shits and stormed off.

Normally I would sort it and help in a diversionary way, but I literally could not get up.

From being on a high after respite, real life came crashing in. I caught some sort of bug - fever, shivers and extraordinary fatigue. I pulled dinner out of the freezer for him with some packet rice, thawed out.

He went to put the rice in. I reminded to heat up for safety.

After an amazing 4 day dementia specific respite for my husband life has returned to normal. I am revived and Im sure he is.

After the first respite, he seems unfazed by another one in June for 2 weeks while I get away with a friend.

Fingers crossed because a life balance would be heaven.

Today we packed a bag for him to go to respite for 4 days. This is a first ever respite. We are entering a new phase.

He doesn’t seem worried or anxious or even asked questions. Strangely blank about it.

I’m pleased he is calm & happy but honestly puzzled.

fingers crossed

Where to start?

I am a carer. For my husband who is 61 with early onset dementia with cognitive decline for the past 5 + years.

This was not the life either he or I planned.

So often carers are meant to enjoy this, be enriched, be saintly.

Here a place to share the unvarnished truth.
