Phantom Frequencies: Kiyoshi Kurosawa on Serpent’s Path, Chime and listening to inner darkness • Journal • A Letterboxd Magazine With his deeply unsettling short film Chime playing in theaters alongside a new 4K restoration of his 1998 revenge thriller Serpent’s Path, visionary filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa tells Isaac Feldberg ab...

"I don’t think it’s the filmmaker’s responsibility to show what you’re supposed to take away from it, or reach any kind of conclusion. In fact, I find that sort of attitude to be very full of yourself, to feel that you must do that, as a filmmaker."

It changes perception because it's real! I've always appreciated devs who go the extra mile for producing handwritten notes and textures in real life to put them in video games (Alan Wake 2 is a very unique prime example, Re Engine Resident Evil titles, Eriksholm, and TLOU series also come to mind)

You can best understand Singal best by realizing that he's a sadist that gets off on hurting trans people. The gaslighting, the victim blaming, the fake act of "just asking questions," are all a part of it. Everything is downstream of it.

Singal's power comes from the tone of reasonableness. But underneath it all are logical fallacies: a false dichotomy, a misleading historical analogy, inflammatory anecdotes, and a refusal to engage with the documented infrastructure of the opposition he purposefully ignores exists.

The NYT and Atlantic coverage legitimatized the right-wing framing. The NYT dedicated over 15k words of front-page coverage in just 8 months questioning gender-affirming care for youth. A FAIR study found the majority of its front-page trans coverage framed care as risky or trans people as threats.

A screenshot of an article from The Dispatch. The headline reads "Trans Issues Are No Conspiracy," with the subheadline, "The public pays attention to trans issues because trans activists wanted them to." It is categorized under "Society & Culture."

Jesse Singal is back on his transphobic bullshit by arguing that the trans rights backlash is self-inflicted and that anyone pointing to coordinated right-wing funding is peddling a "conspiracy theory." It's a masterclass in false dichotomy and victim blaming.

Steven Soderbergh teases "a lot of AI" in his upcoming movies Steven Soderbergh teases "a lot of AI" in his upcoming movies

What kind of AI? To do what exactly? What models is it trained on? What's the approximate ecological impact? These are some of the questions to be asked of talent, always, when AI in filmmaking is discussed.

This is the century where the human species turned genocidal against itself & the planet. From the industrial revolution all the way to climate change ego death psychosis – too many reasons to count. The choice will be to turn the tables or hide under them, waiting to die.

I get Max Richter's Hamnet soundtrack – if anyone earned the use of On the Nature of Daylight it's him, and the entire album flows from it / around it. It's genuinely interesting work by a fascinating musician – his work for the Royal Ballet's Woolf Works is transcendental.
