A scene from My Three Sons, with Ernie on the left circled. Ernie, Robbie, and Chip each hold a cookie jar with their name on it, while Steve (the dad) holds a cookie in his hand.

An illustration from the LDS "Old Testament Stories" manual from 1980. It features an Egyptian woman talking to a young Moses. Moses is bare-chested and is as muscular as a full-grown man, even though he has a very young face and a bad haircut.
While preparing for Sunday School tomorrow, I encountered this horrifying 1980 picture of Moses.
So of course I'm using it in my lesson.

Hard disagree. I don't know why cats have this aloof, uncaring reputation, because I find them to be the sweetest little creatures. Even my most aloof cat still liked being with us.
Teaching a sow to sow is actually genius. Work smarter, not harder.
April 6, 1776: The phrase "united states of America" (in lower case) appears in print for the first known time. The anonymous writer writes an essay in Dixon and Hunter's Virginia Gazette advocating independence as an economic necessity.
I can't help but wonder what that man is doing next to the tree!

Remember when I spent all that time making this very funny Easter thread and nobody noticed?
March 31, 1926: The Easter cover of Latvian magazine Atputa.
I always wait ten minutes after sacrament meeting to start my Sunday School lessons, and even then people are still trickling in. I just don't think a five-minute break is realistic, especially if I'm taking time to set up a TV.
A handwritten letter with the word "see" underlined. Each e has a vertical line next to a curly capital E.
This week I was going through some old office files from the 1990s and 2000s when I encountered the worst handwritten e's I have ever seen. Like, what's up with that vertical line on the left of each e?! It's more work and makes it less legible!
Don't be overwhelmed by your evidence; you're telling a part of the story, not the entire thing.
Where's your thesis; where are your topic sentences?
Is this relevant, or is this a tangent?
Analysis and argument, not summary.
Show, don't tell.
Photo of a white and light ginger, medium haired, tabby kitten, looking down at a miniature typewriter and raising one paw as if about to smack it. He’s standing on brown carpeting in a living room setting.
Suddenly feeling terrible that I’ve never given my cats a tiny typewriter. Photo from my collection, 1966.
the human body was not designed to know what the worst person in the world is doing every fifteen minutes
This heat wave is very distressing to me. And yet I feel like as an individual, I already do more to help the environment than the average person does. I just feel so helpless.
A child in colorful overalls sits on a person in an Easter Bunny costume. The costume has a large bunny head, and beneath the nose is an open spot for the wearer's face. The person in the costume has their face painted white to blend in with the white costume.

A kid in an orange and black flannel shirt stands next to a person in an Easter Bunny costume sitting in a chair covered with material with an Easter egg print. The costume has an Easter Bunny face on the torso, and a large, purple hat with a flower is on the person's head.

I asked a friend in Utah why Mike Lee keeps getting elected even though his politics (selling public lands) are widely unpopular on both sides of the aisle. “He’s a member of a political dynasty,” he said, “though we know him here as the stupid brother.”
Seems to fit.
A while ago, I was attending a gathering where one man said, "Does anyone know where the word 'cop' comes from?" I accurately said, "It's short for 'copper'!" The man *laughed* at me and said it was "constable on patrol." 😠 I found him less trustworthy after that.
Thanks to @illinoispress.bsky.social for production, as always!
The winter 2026 issue features histories of Utah's Jewish, Samoan, disability, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, GuateMayan, and Japanese American communities.
More to come in subsequent issues!
The first Utah Historical Quarterly issue of the Peoples of Utah Revisited is out now!
In 1976, Helen Papanikolas published "The Peoples of Utah," highlighting various communities in Utah. Fifty years later, we're doing it again in UHQ.

I visited there last summer. It was amazing!
Last night I dreamed that Tic Tac made special flavors for St. Patrick's Day. The flavors were corned beef and ham Reuben, black stout, and Irish whiskey.
Unsurprisingly, I wasn't really interested in trying them.☘️🍺
‘Hey’ came before ‘hi,’ and ‘hi' came before ‘hello.’
‘Hi’ is most likely a variant of ‘hey.’
‘Hello’ is not related to either.
Goodbye.
Horrific.
There's a Melville Drive in Salt Lake? I might have to make a pilgrimage!
The cover of "Millennial Star" in August 1970. It has a black-and-white photograph of a newlywed couple; the wife has flowers in her curly hair and large eyes. The husband has a beard and longish hair.
Whenever I have to dig through the Millennial Star on Archive.org, those 1970s eyes get me.
