What’s the best strategy to address this issue? Take on these code requirements piecemeal (eg single stair bills, elevator bills, etc) or pass some type of structural reform (E.g cost benefit considered in code updates, etc)?

At a basic level, it’s just inter-trade solidarity. If they’re smart, they realize code reform will come for them too – there’s lots of featherbedding in the codes and regulatory policy generally that they benefit from. Actually they have even more of a reason to oppose code reform than the…

What’s up with some of the trades opposing? Do they just capitalize to flow to the larger projects where trades are used and single stairs aren’t applicable?

Icing on the cake is that the driver is using this as defense and saying he was afraid for his family since the person looked to be homeless

Interesting to see Berkeley using the budget crisis as an opportunity to shift certain services to the county (e.g. mobile crisis, vector control, mental health services, etc.). This makes sense rather than the city having its own bespoke health department.

If I understand correctly, CARB is no longer cutting any allowances from cap-and-invest in response to oil industry lobbying. This jeopardizes the future of CA High Speed Rail, which relies heavily on private financing backed by a $1B/yr guarantee from cap-and-invest, which is unlikely to happen.

Hopefully this action precludes some of the really egregious bills that have been proposed in this space from moving forward.

I've seen this in plenty of other areas where administrative agencies/DOJ only acts once the leg forces their hands.

Conway Jr. and other employees said the vehicle that hit the man was a truck, possibly an F-250 or F-350. The street is a northbound one-way road where cars move speedily going from the Mission District down town.

Another pedestrian killed by an oversized truck in SF.

Why have there not been any class action lawsuits against American auto companies for knowingly producing such deadly and destructive trucks and SUVs?

72 should have 5 minute frequencies in the East Bay. We can make this happen.

First step is passing Connect Bay Area measure.

Then next year campaign to restore 72R.

And after that make bus rapid transit happen from Oakland to Richmond.

BRT would spur huge ridership, housing and economic growth.

Make Hopkins Street Safe for ALL! On April 15, Berkeley City Council Facilities, Infrastructure, Transportation, Environment & Sustainability (FITES) Committee will weigh in on a proposal several Councilmembers have put forward to repave Hopkins Street without any bike or transit infrastructure improvements. Act now to urge the FITES committee to instead recommend repaving Hopkins with pedestrian, bike, and transit improvements, as approved in an earlier 8-1 council vote. We can't afford to miss this opportunity. Protected bike lanes on Hopkins will provide critical low-stress bicycle connections to schools and other key destinations for people of all ages and abilities. If the City does not create those connections when the street is repaved, there will continue to be a significant gap in the City’s low-stress bike network, likely for decades. Send the committee a letter now to let them know that making Hopkins Street safe for ALL is important to you.

🚨Hopkins Street🚨

With an important Council committee vote coming on April 15, it's time, yet again, to speak up for pedestrian🚶‍♀️, bicycle 🚲, and transit 🚌 improvements on Hopkins!

San Francisco’s new safety strategy: A crackdown on bikes San Francisco has long treated bike rule-breaking loosely. Now comes a sharp enforcement shift

Two articles released today: One details the first round of City employee layoffs while the other shows how the City is deploying law enforcement to ticket bicyclists at inconsequential intersections with no impact to safety.

You'd think that SF's lower senior voter clout would help with housing issues, but there doesn't seem to be a correlation between younger voter clout and more housing being built. Maybe it does influence transit/bike infrastructure....
