Husband fears missing childbirth due to Labour’s new English proficiency test Immigration plans to increase language requirement could prevent Armenian man from joining British wife

I wonder if people realise that Labour's new level for English language proficiency testing would exclude roughly two thirds of the population, UK born that is, across classes, across sectors and across regions. It's a ridiculous level to claim is needed.

We’ve persuaded France to change rules to stop migrants reaching Britain, Cooper says France has agreed to intervene to stop migrants boarding dinghies in French waters in change of policy, UK home secretary says

Do you know why it was determined that States should not intercept people while they are in the water? Because it significantly increases the risk of people drowning. That's it. It was meant to preserve life, and now Cooper is celebrating getting that changed.

Title: LPHR statement on the crimes of starvation, persecution, extermination and genocide being on a continuum as UN food stocks run out in Gaza

Date: 28 April 2025

Text: Last Friday's announcement by the UN World Food Programme that its food stocks in the Gaza Strip have run out under Israel's eight-week-old complete ban on the entry of food, fuel and medicine or any other life-sustaining supplies, is profoundly alarming.

We urge all relevant actors to clearly recognise that the exceptionally serious international crimes of starvation, persecution, extermination and genocide are on a continuum. And that each of these crimes is actually or potentially engaged by Israel's imposition of a total siege on a destroyed Gaza with no end in sight.

The UK government, and other third states with possible influence, must urgently eradicate the pervasive impunity that has been allowed to thrive within the Israeli government, and apply real consequences to compel the immediate end of the punitive starvation of Gaza's trapped civilian population. A step-change in action is manifestly required and far too long overdue.

“That they should be the ones to welcome Pope Francis’s coffin in the basilica is because these people are those who represented the focus of his mission,” said Father Giulio Albanese, head of missionary cooperation and communications for the Vicariate of Rome. “They are those who live on the peripheries, geographical and existential peripheries.”

The final honor guard for Pope Francis included migrants, prisoners, transgender people, the homeless and others selected by the Vicariate of Rome as a symbol of the late pope’s mission of inclusion and outreach.

I spoke to three KCs, and we were formally advised by two, at Premier League sets who said FWS's case was clearly wrong, and one said not even arguable. 1/2

In just under a decade in the UK, we have witnessed increased hostile reporting of trans folk, a rise in anti-trans hate crimes, blocks on health care for youth wanting to transition and judicial decisions that curtail trans people’s freedoms in public. We can and must do better to challenge it all.

So much anti-trans litigation is not about the legal outcome. The litigation instead is a political strategy designed to foster a public atmosphere of hostility and anxiety for trans people and frame trans rights as an abstract debate. We must keep resisting this institutionalisation of transphobia.

Yesterday I was emailed by a barrister: "In my network I have on average one trans suicide per month. Its devastating and a genoicde of a whole group of people."

Those in the trans community know this is true. Wes Streeting's vigorous attempts to suppress this reality is unforgiveable.
