that said I did extremely dislike All Time High as both not a Bond song and its own thing.

also a correction: Goldfinger has Bond fucking a lesbian straight. I didn't actually know the plot of Octopussy until now, which says. a lot. about the movie, I think.

anyway this has been my report.

"Not A Bond Song" is not a bad thing, it means it lies outside of the taxonomical requirements of this experiment. I would rather listen to any Gladys Knight song because she's talented and any given R&B fuckjam by her is better than License To Kill. I also feel this about Sheryl Crow.

In that vein, I would not call Skyfall much of a #1! But it encapsulates The Skyfall Feel! It fits RIGHT into the atmosphere of the Craig films and can stand on its own. In contrast, Nobody Does It Better is not Bond song because I can and could imagine Spy Who Loved Me having a different theme.

I would agree if Madonna was actually trying and not phoning it in. She needs to be putting her whole pussy into it considering Never Forget.

and if you rerun the Bond theme without doing anything new, congrats, it's a worse Bond theme. From Russia With Love segues into the Bond theme and is better for it. OHMSS ranks as high as it does because it starts as mediocre Bond theme and gets WEIRD with it (positive).

it's actually pretty vital you DON'T do both, otherwise you get the ones that suck or are forgettable. like. goldfinger/diamonds stand out because they both hit 2 HARD. thunderball is worse than goldfinger because it's a retread of goldfinger which stood on its own.

a Bond song either:
1: interpolates or interprets the James Bond Theme as designed by Monty Norman in a way that is unique to the production and not a derivative retread.
2: feels thematically in-line with the movie, its atmosphere, its plot, its plot, dare I say its vibes.

it doesn't need both.

to answer a question posed by an off-site friend: what makes a song FEEL like a Bond song? this is an interesting one because you'd think "oh well it does the riff and horns and it is Spy Music :)" and like.

okay yeah that's ONE way to make a good Bond song. there exists another path.
