Students' inability to connect independent clauses or to attach dependent clauses interferes with their ability to think clearly. They deserve to be made to practice writing well. We're cheating them & they're cheating themselves with bad writing that doesn't help their thinking.

This vibrant oil painting is Henri Matisse's Interior with Phonograph (also known as Intérieur au phonographe), painted in 1924. It was created during Matisse's significant "Nice period," when he lived on the French Riviera and focused heavily on luminous domestic interiors.

I have a tinfoil hat suspicion that Trump's team is doubling down on anti-pope stuff because they are securing the base of evangelicals and, especially, fundamentalists who are *extremely* suspicious of or even antagonist to Catholicism and any idea of the Pope's kind of religious authority.
Reminder: The Bush II administration passed a law to require the post office— unlike any other US service— to prefund the retirement compensation of workers 75 years into the future— in other words, workers who haven’t even been born yet
The post office isn’t losing money. It’s being crushed.

The poots of a barrel-chested dog are not to be reckoned with.
I know it would decrease our likelihood to be hired and would open us to public scrutiny of our bodies and behaviors, but about once a month I become fully dedicated to the cause of menstrual days off. 💀
I study Arendt, so I know it's not ok, but there are times, more & more so now, I want to retreat from this world of doomed politics. I don't want to give my attention, precious as it is, to each step of the march into inhumanity. But action trumps attention, & my sphere of action is manageable.
Just basking in the glow of connections between ideas, found mid-lecture and alongside a group of young students in a 2000 level class. 🌟
In the most respectful way possible, put up or shut up. We need Congress to be proactive and powerful, not reactive and rhetorical.
The #ConferenceCrud is immeasurably worse after nights in the French Quarter.
Yay for the first day of the semester tomorrow! 💀
Rereading chapter 9 of Origins of Totalitarianism for my SPSA paper and, damn, it is even more uncomfortable and disturbing now.
"...incapable of providing a law for those who had lost the protection of a national government, [they] transferred the whole matter to the police."
Front pages of American newspapers after Jan. 6, 2021, with headlines like "Capitol Chaos," "Assault on Democracy," "Pro-Trump mob storms Capitol."

I'm thinking the only way to get cities, police departments, and even ICE to stop the unlawful arrests/abusive behavior is to sue them into next century for every single instance. Does qualified immunity protect law enforcement in civil courts as well? Hit 'em in the $$$$$$ wherever possible.
Every journalist who knew and didn't tweet it put keeping their career ahead of political stability and, as of current numbers, 40 lives. I hope they don't get a wink of sleep.
This was an unprovoked strike against the head of a sovereign nation, w/o Congressional approval. As far as we know, there wasn't even the pretext of "responding to the calls of the people" of Venezuela to list the dictator.
Every person who knew in time to stop it and didn't say a word is guilty.

Star Trek The Next Generation scene. The bridge of the Enterprise is shown from above looking down. Data sits at his console looking back at the rest of the crew, who are all passed out in various situations; on the floor, slumped over a console, or half falling off their chairs. Worf, notorious Klingon warrior, dangles over the tactical station. No caption.
Ah, so business as usual this year.
In Montemarte
ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.
Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.
"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.
"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

You going to do anything?
Abducting a man and stealing the groceries from his family.
What are you going to do?
Should I be concerned that the copies of the 60 Minutes CECOT segment going around could be altered with AI? I'd like to see someone who knows about that sort of thing verify that it's the real deal original reporting. Nowadays, you have to be suspicious of even the presentation of evil. Exhausting.
Rick Steves is an American treasure. Just all-around, one of the absolute best of us.
"I'm going to bed so early! This medication is a bit rough at bedtime, but at least I'll get a full night's sleep every night!"

Here I am, at the crack of dawn. There is no such thing as a full night of sleep.

Colourful picture of a woman in white standing in a park with naive paintings of trees and grass: reds, greens, orange.
Haven’t posted any Gabriele Münter for a while. Here’s her:
