Accommodation for those seeking asylum is often dire, and getting worse with expanded use of camps. This is a welcome ruling, but only scratches the surface. When it's more humane, and cost effective, to invest in community support schemes, there's no excuse. 1/2

Migration Advisory Committee data suggests savings of c. £600m, not £10bn as Mahmood claimed.

Despite what MSM says, immigration is not in the top 10 topics when people list their own personal priorities; It only emerges as a top issue when pollsters ask "what are the country’s priorities?"
That gap is largely down to cynical agenda-setting.

This BBC immigration and asylum story is a moral panic. Poorly evidenced, generalised panic about a marginalised social group. Next week, the government will respond with a new 'crackdown'. This will then further exacerbate public anxiety.
You know who wins from all of this, Nigel Farage.
He's 16 FFS. The Home Office knows that the chances are, as with most people piloting small boats, that he was forced into doing so by gangs. He should be having his asylum claim processed, not being prosecuted.

BBCs coverage isn't just misleading, it is inflammatory. It has predictably been latched onto by the far right and others, including this government, to call for even more restrictions on those seeking asylum. Along with others, I explain here how wrong it is 👇

So improve reporting and investigation for domestic abuse overall.
This drip feed of misleading claims making out that there is widespread abuse of the asylum system is going to harm those genuinely affected, and make it harder for them to seek safety. 1/

And also in comparison to the very real difficulties faced by migrants and refugees every single day, in which the BBC takes far less interest until there’s a riot or some other crisis.
Both abject and pathetic, in short /end
The BBC undercover investigation into false immigration claims is deeply irresponsible journalism. It does not highlight that exploitation by unregulated advisors occurs because legal aid was cut and the system is insane to navigate.
As @rainbowmigration.bsky.social explains, UK govt data shows 2% of asylum claims included sexual orientation as a need for protection.
The hostile asylum system requires LGBTQI+ ppl to “prove” their sexual orientation/gender identity. Yet many have hidden or denied who they are to avoid violence.
We are aware of the BBC’s investigation into individuals allegedly helping people fabricate LGBTQI+ asylum claims. Read the full statement on our website:
The real scandal of the asylum system is the cruelty & incompetence which 1000s of people endure every day but which rarely gets spotlighted at the top of the BBC News site.
Dan here nails much of what makes me uncomfortable about the BBC’s “fake gay refugees” story but here’s a few more points 1/
Disgusting reporting by BBC using a tiny number of cases to suggest widespread abuse of a system which routinely denies LGBTQIA+ individuals asylum and forces them back into environments of persecution. This article massively distorts the reality of the situation. 1/

No one should be forced to live in squalid converted hotels. But closing hotels must mean housing people in real homes, in communities - NOT ex-military camps.
Real homes are safer, more dignified - and 5x cheaper per-night than camps.
#CommunitiesNotCamps
The Home Office is closing down hotels and moving people seeking asylum to warehouses & ex-military sites. This week they are holding an "industry day" for private companies about the £10 billion contract. This is the asylum scandal we should be talking about.

This is welcome news, but only scratches the surface.
All hotels must close as an urgent priority.
Instead, people seeking safety should have somewhere safe to call home, so they can heal and rebuild their lives.
📣 Homes, not hotels.

The counter rally to the far-right today in Coleraine was a powerful display of solidarity and community support that shamed the far-right’s paltry showing.
