Retail Theft: What to Know and Where to Go for More Data, research, and experts to help make sense of a complex issue

We have an issue brief on retail theft where you can read more about all of this. It was last updated in 2023 but is still relevant:

These policies don’t reduce crime or address any of the problems that might lead to shoplifting: understaffed stores, working conditions that leave employees indifferent to shoplifting, widespread poverty, and inflation.

Walgreens executive says 'maybe we cried too much last year' about theft Walgreens acknowledged it may have overblown concerns about thefts in their stores after shrinkage stabilized over the past year.

That grain of salt is especially important given that Walgreens' CFO walked back many of the company's previous claims about retail theft in 2023, even going so far as to say "Maybe we cried too much last year."

@jeffasher.bsky.social told @juddlegum.bsky.social that NRF's findings should be "taken with a grain of salt" because they are "based on a survey of impressions rather than any meticulously collected evidence."

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Instead, this year, NRF released a report based on online surveys from security executives at certain stores. They used those surveys to conclude that shoplifting incidents increased by 93% btwn 2019 & 2023.

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

(Maybe that's because last year's report showed that shrink rates have been stable over the last five years, which doesn't match retailers' claims about out-of-control shoplifting.)

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

This year, NRF chose not to release its annual report on shrink, an industry term meaning things that are stolen, spoiled, or misplaced.
