Fighter Bomber - Spectrum Computing Fighter Bomber for ZX-Spectrum 48K (Activision Inc/UK, 1990) by George Iwanow, Terry Spencer, Derrick Austin

The best simulator I can recall is Fighter Bomber. It was great in the Speccy and especially the Amiga.

That's the right plane alright (the Lightning is one of the most awesome planes ever built) but doesn't seem to be the right game based on the attributes described.

I would love to find the original and check out their graphics routines. Maybe there's something to learn there!
